The selfie is no small issue as you will see. For clarity sake, a selfie is defined as:a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. The Selfie is now an ever-accepted form of self-art-love that was once the domain of teenage texters but has hit the mainstream. It is as ubiquitous as the smartphone itself and is now affecting, news and even international events. The selfie is now a fully-formed human cultural-behavior and its rise is not just tied to the internet, the proliferation of cameras, but the mobile device revolution that is changing EVERYTHING. True: The selfie made news last year when it was included in the OxfordDictionaries.com catalog and named the 2013 word of the year. Good for Oxford on keeping up with the popular vernacular however this is online acceptance only. It’s inclusion in the Oxford English Dictionary is only being considered. Music: What about the song #selfie by EDM, DJ group Chainsmokers? Originally made as a joke or concert song, it exploded online and went viral. The song playfully and cleverly characterizes how the selfie plays out in young-adult pop culture (kids these days). As of Aug 2014, the official video on YouTube has more than 2-million views. The topic is obviously fun, and light and still a bit of a joke. But researching this I quickly realized my own selfie history that I had entirely forgotten. As I started my career in communications as a photojournalist, my mentor taught me to always take a selfie while out on these various trips. Why?...no one is going to ever to your photo, that's your job. Back in the days of film, when we'd get our photos back from "processing" (cold be hours, maybe days later) it was always a pleasant surprise, even if it your head was cut off or goofy looking. There was not way to see how it looked. There was no immediate distribution available. There was not an immediate feedback from people you know and some you don't. What does it mean when the digital-citizen population commits to self-identifying themselves into the great online database that is the Internet? What does it say about us, why are we doing it so much and most importantly, how do you take the best Selfie?
