When God’s glory is your highest goal you fight with Him, not just for Him. David was sent by his father to the battle field to deliver bread to his brothers, and while he was there he witnessed Goliath’s blasphemous taunts of Israel. David’s courage and faith grow as the day unfolds beginning with him essentially stating that “someone should do something”, to “I’ll do it”, and then “I guarantee victory”, and finally telling Goliath “I’m going to cut your head off”. Because he had his eyes fixed on the glory of the Lord, David lost concern for his own health, his own safety, and his own glory. This positioned him uniquely to witness and participate in a miraculous move of God. David simultaneously serves as an example to us, as well as a foreshadowing of Jesus. Our great enemy of sin has been defeated by King Jesus through His death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus’s victory is complete, He has beheaded our great enemy and guaranteed victory for us. All we need to do is trust in His fight on our behalf.
