Business Over Beer

Business

This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only the Sasquatch Hunters, we celebrate our 1 Year Anniversary, recorded at Hopworks Urban Brewery, the Birthplace of The BOB, with Founder and Head Brewmaster, Christian Ettinger. Christian has been brewing beer for over 25 years and first experienced the brewpub as the center of the community while living abroad in Cologne Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., as the craft beer scene was exploding here in the Pacific Northwest, Christian knew by the age of 19 that he wanted to start this business. Combining the European style brewpub experience with the more modern craft brewing approach, Hopworks Urban Brewery opened in Portland, OR in 2007.  We already knew going into this episode that we loved Hopworks, and we were pleasantly surprised that Christian shares our love of quoting Seinfeld and movies, hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.  Prost!   In this episode: People have been gathering around beer for the last 9000 years since the ice age receded.  The plural of Sasquatch is Sasquaii, the second "i" is silent.  Company culture starts with the founder and the things you stand for, and then build a team that is like minded and thoughtful.   A camel is a horse designed by committee B Corp provides a way to benchmark themselves and focus on local neighborhoods and environmental groups and to be profitable in a meaningful way, as well as spotlight areas where more work needs to be done.   The pandemic is a shared experience for all small businesses, but you have to get scrappy, be resourceful, surround yourself with great people, and really get back to basics.   Getting lean is about getting rid of dead weight and focusing on what can you reasonably accomplish yourself and what you need help with. Both are ok, but don't ever be all in one pot.      Guest Beers: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% abv, 65 IBU "Abominable is a perfect blend of caramel malts and Simcoe, Azacca, and Centennial hops, creating a complex, spicy, and citrusy winter ale."   Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Fresh Hop Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% ABV, 65 IBU "You've never tasted Abominable like this before!
