Professor Anke Hassel speaks to László Andor about a new book she co-edited with Bruno Palier entitled "Growth and Welfare in Advanced Capitalist Economies. How Have Growth Regimes Evolved?” The book offers an opportunity to analyse the interaction between growth strategies and social policies, both from an academic perspective but also applied to European policy. Prof. Hassel elaborates on the controversies around the crisis response at the time of the latest (eurozone debt) crisis but also explains how the current responses to the pandemic differ (EU support to Kurzarbeit, reinforced youth guarantee etc.). The Covid-19 crisis offers a new opportunity to reshape European growth regimes towards climate sustainability and taking advantage of digital technology. But Germany itself also needs to revamp its growth regime towards higher social standards and more public investment, for which Prof. Hassel and Secretary General Andor argue forcefully in their conversation.
