Michael Fanelli is a bassist, educator, musicologist, and author who is also Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Northern Iowa. As string/orchestra specialist at the UNI Malcolm Price Laboratory School, he created and taught the string curriculum for grades 4 through 12 based on Rolland Teaching of Action in String Playing materials. In the School of Music, he was the instructor of a string methods course modeled on Rolland’s University of Illinois pedagogy course. We talk about Michael’s path through the music world, getting introduced to Paul Rolland and his innovative approach to string pedagogy, how this pedagogy can be applied to double bassists, and much more.
