This weeks portion discussion: Balak - Num. 19:1–22:1; Jdg. 11:1–33; Jn. 19:38–42 Next weeks portion: Pinchas - Num. 25:10–29:40; Jer. 1:1–2:3; Jn. 2:13–22 This odd story is a favorite of mine for many years. I think it has to do with it's oddness. It altogether challenges our nice tidy theology, by unpacking our theological box and strewing the pieces all over the floor. If that hasn't happened to you, perhaps you weren't paying attention. Balaam is never called a false prophet yet he uses the tools of divination, and many more. Three key points for us to take, I think would be these. 1. Way of Balaam: 2 Peter 2:15 a prophet for hire, willing to make religion the source of his wealth 2. Error of Balaam: Jude 1:11 being hired by the enemies of God and His people to curse them for Balak’s sake and money. 3. Doctrine of Balaam: Rev 2:14 spiritual unchastity and marriage with the world. Opening the door to unrighteousness will always lead to your downfall. 4. This leads to the blindness of Balaam. Self-imposed. The donkey has to intervene.
