Miscellaneous

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   This week on RIMScast, Justin Smulison is addressing two hot topics with two fantastic guests! The first being the RIMS Canada Conference (held Oct. 5th‒6th, 2021) with Jacqueline Toering and then “your path to the boardroom” with Craig Rowe of ClearRisk.   Jacqueline Toering is a RIMS Canada Council Executive Member, Chair of the RCC Sub Committee and National Conference Committee, and the Director of Risk and Safety at the University of the Fraser Valley. In her conversation with Justin, she speaks about all of the great things happening with (and around) the RIMS Canada Conference 2021, her experience in planning and coordinating a virtual conference, and her insights on this year’s theme of “Revision.”   In the second half of the episode, Justin speaks with Craig Rowe. Craig is the President, CEO, and Co-founder of ClearRisk Inc. He originally founded ClearRisk in 2006 after 15 years in the risk and insurance business, in order to create modern software solutions for medium to large organizations. Craig also actively works as a mentor and advisor with tech startups and entrepreneurs and is the Chair of techNL.   In his conversation with Justin, they speak about Craig’s experiences in the boardroom, his insights for risk professionals who want to establish a presence among their boards, and actionable advice for risk professionals. This conversation also doubles as a preview for Craig’s upcoming Path to the Boardroom webinar session called, “Board Dynamics: Confidence, Communication, and Clarity,” that he will moderate on October 13th, 2021! If you want to build your career, build your network, [and] build your experience much, much more quickly … get on boards.” — Craig Rowe   “The better job we do of managing risk, the better the organizations that we work for are. We make companies more successful. I think we can’t lose sight of the impact that risk management has on organizations.” — Craig Rowe   “Risk management for any organization — for profit or not — is about maximizing the upside of risk and minimizing the downside of risk. … You want to be able to make good decisions that result in better outcomes.” — Craig Rowe   “If you want to rise in your organization quickly, don’t wait for someone to ask you for a report. Create it for them. Anticipate what they need and … deliver it to them in meaningful ways.” — Craig Rowe
