This Black History Month I wanted to share with you the story of my Dad – in my own words. His story of struggle and perseverance, the story of black history in the United States – it is all part of a larger story of our nation working to live up to its promise and potential. I stand on the Senate floor and never lose sight of what had to happen to get me there. My dad's not with me, he never got to see me speak on the Senate floor – but I know he's watching progress in heaven along with all of our ancestors.
