Since the events surrounding the so-called "hard-lockdown" of Victorian public housing estates, Meg and Kevin take advantage of the increased attention on public housing issues. This week we interview Professor Libby Porter, a social scientist who works at RMIT and with the Save Public Housing Collective. We discuss secure and dignified housing as a fundamental human right (rather than a means of wealth creation), housing policy, a lack of attention to public housing, and the sale of public land. Later we talk about the government cuts to tertiary education as a calculated decontruction of the foundation of our educational institutions, it's parallels with the housing and other sectors, and the frightening labour conditions that have led to casualisation, "offboarding", and a health disaster in the aged care sector. Reports co-authored by Prof. Libby Porter:Here is a report on the impacts of the Public Housing Renewal Program in Moreland, Darebin, and Yarra. And here is another report on public land sales in Victoria since 2000 which could have been used for public housing.
