Join Rob today as he shares the teaching of Henri Nouwen, a dutch writer and theologian. Today Rob dives into Nouwen’s philosophical teachings and discusses the importance of making mistakes in life, why it is important to be a person who can offer a safe space for others and what it means to clear the space. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of the things that is necessary in life is to make mistakes. We have to pick ourselves up from our failures and repeat if we want to achieve the results we want. This also involves the forgiveness of ourselves because if we don’t, we end up berating ourselves and having a poor self-image. One thing you can teach others is that there are times when you will feel great and successful, and there are going to be times when you don’t. There is pain along the way, that is part of the human journey. To be a part of a culture is to be a part of a place where you feel safe. People need safe places, the world is harsh and not everybody has stable relationships. If you are the kind of person that can offer a safe place, people will come to you. They may not know why but they will be attracted to you and they will listen to you. Be the creator of that safe place. There is a drive towards simplicity that requires discipline otherwise we drift to complexity and chaos. It is the discipline that keeps us on that road and it requires effort. The inability to reach your goals instantly may leave you feeling weak. If you had the strength you would be there now. Understand and teach your people that struggle is part of the process and to stand back and see the bigger picture. Clear the space, we can use this principle for many different scenarios. It may mean tidying up your workspace, it may also mean tidying up your mind so that you focus on one thing at a time. BEST MOMENTS “It all begins with ourselves.” “The sooner we learn to accept that, the better people we will be.” “Be the creator of that safe place where people can fail, and it still is ok.”  VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast The Stoic Art of Living: Inner Resilience and Outer Results - Tom Morris     ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background.
