Their best assessment is that it spontaneously jumped to humans from an intermediary animal species.Data from researchers in Israel suggests the Pfizer vaccine is indeed reducing viral load, a key signal it could diminish the transmission and spread of Covid-19. Accomplishing that is key to reducing the risk of more variants emerging and to achieving herd immunity.The percentage of American adults who are willing to get the vaccine is going up, but that’s not to say there aren’t still problems. The number went from 39% in September to 49% in December. But younger adults, women, and Black Americans were among the most likely to say they will not be vaccinated. The most common concerns are side effects and lack of trust in the government.The pandemic revealed a worldwide crisis in how we treat and care for our elderly, and the Vatican has taken note. A position paper has labeled it a massacre and is calling for a new paradigm of care. One thing it suggests is resisting institutionalizing the elderly as part of what the Pope calls today's “throwaway culture” that treats many people as nonessential.There are safety measures, and then there are safety measures with teeth. Big ones. A new policy announced yesterday says anyone arriving in England and found to have lied about a recent visit to one of 33 countries on the travel ban list can face up to 10 years in prison.In the United States cases were down 36%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations down 26% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 25th.  There are now 9,680,957 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Arizona, and Georgia. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Aleutians East Borough, AK. Burleson, TX. Crowley, CO. San Saba, TX. Perry, AL. Oldham, TX. Cleveland, AR. McCormick, SC. Mills, TX. And Crockett, TX. The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are South Carolina, Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. There’ve been a total 468,103 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.72%.The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 520. Texas 303. Arizona 231. Florida 230. New York 172. Georgia 171. Pennsylvania 157. Ohio 99. New Jersey 93. And Washington 85. The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose are Alaska at 15%, West Virginia at 12.2%, and New Mexico at 12%. The bottom 3 are Alabama at 7.7%, and Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Rhode Island at 8%.Globally, cases were down 25%, and deaths down 11% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.  Globally, there are 25,595,795 active cases.The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 95,542. Brazil 51,733. France 18,870. Spain 16,402.
