World War 2 started well before 1939. Its roots stretch back nearly a decade - to clashes between the Japanese and regional Chinese governments and peoples living in the hotly contested borderland of Manchuria. The terror this conflict wrought is largely disregarded by history: this is one of WWII's great tragedies.
