The plot of every Hallmark movie is about a career woman who is too busy for love but she has to move to a small town where a handsome local bachelor teaches her about the true spirit of the holiday. It starts snowing and they kiss. There is also a dog. As we enter the Christmas season, the most wonderful time of the year, which is supposed to be the most peaceful time, can often be the most stressful time We want everything to be a Hallmark movie, where everything is perfect. It's easy to feel like we need perfection for us to experience any peace or joy. The Christmas season will offer you everything you need right now to experience God‘s perfect peace. The Christmas story tells us of the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph had an odd love story. There was a wicked king, a corrupt government, Jew haters, and they were forced to do some unreasonable things and pay high taxes. They delivered their son in a stable surrounded by barn animals. Where was their Hallmark story? 1.) Peace is a Promise "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." -Isaiah 9:6 NIV Peace is not the absence of conflict. It's the presence of something better in its place. Peace isn’t circumstantial! It’s a promise from the God of the universe. "As it is written: 'There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. The way of peace they do not know! There is no fear of God before their eyes." -Romans 3:10-17 NIV The point of Christmas isn’t the imperfect setting for the birth of a baby let alone the Savior, King of Kings. The point isn’t that they were far from the comfort of their homes on Christmas. The point of Christmas is that despite imperfect circumstances, peace arrived on Christmas Day. We can now all live in peace despite the stink of our circumstances. Peace is here.
