Denzel was a wrestler at RJ Reynolds high school and placed second in the state tournament. He went on to wrestle for Appalachian State University for four years and became an NCAA Division I All American his senior year. While wrestling in a tournament, Denzel was approached by WWE talent scout Jerry Briscoe, Briscoe offered Denzel a WWE tryout. After the tryout he was offered a training contract with the WWE.
