E30: Huddle Up and Listen Up Volume 1

This episode is another special one for me as Coach Jan Mann recruited me back during my junior golf days when she was the coach at UNC Wilmington. How that experience played out is a major influence on my approach to Brandi Jackson Golf and the impact that the recruiting process can have on a young female's maturity and growth.  Coach Mann shares her coaching journey, along with some insight about the current scenarios we are facing amidst the COVID-19 impact on college athletics and recruiting. And she sheds some light on managing your time as a student-athlete and how the impact you can make on the team and program is more important than what it can do for you.

After a stellar collegiate and amateur career, followed by a 6-year professional golf stint on both the LPGA and Symetra Tour, Coach Glaser thought she would leave the golf biz and head in a totally different direction. After the opportunity to serve as the assistant coach at Duke University presented itself, she entered the college coach field and has made her mark there as well.  She just wrapped up her 8th season at the University of Florida, where the team had captured two titles before the season was suspended. Coach Glaser shares some insightful advice about playing college golf and managing life during these uncertain times.

Despite pursuing a career as a professional golfer, Michigan Women’s Head Coach Jan Dowling always felt she wanted to get into coaching. She is a self-proclaimed golf nerd, and the impact her college coach at Kent State made on her left a lasting impression. When offered the chance to join the Kent State program as their assistant coach, she made the move into college coaching. Finishing up her 7th season at Michigan, Coach Dowling and her team were just gaining some momentum as the season came to such an unexpected end due to the COVID-19 virus. She talks about the emotional end to the season and all that she has learned over her time as a college coach.

At the time that college sports all around the country were coming to an unexpected and emotional end, Furman University's Natalie Srinivasan was the #1 ranked college golfer in the country according to Golfstat. She had 2 wins during the fall season and a runner-up finish in their last tournament. Natalie discusses how disappointing it was to have her senior year cut short but how she is looking at the positives as she gets ready for the next phase of her life, professional golf. She shares about her time at Furman and the advice she has for those getting ready to take on college golf in the coming years.

You may not think much when you hear the name UNC Charlotte. Even Coach Holly Clark admits she didn't when she was considered for the first-ever women's head golf coach back in 2015. But that has certainly changed. Coach Clark joined the UNC Charlotte coaching staff after 6 years as the assistant coach at Vanderbilt. Prior to that, she started the Carson Newman women's golf program. When the opportunity to build another program from scratch presented itself, Coach Clark and her husband headed to Charlotte and with that came a determination and confidence for not just building a program, but being one of the best. Coach Amy Bond didn’t have plans of being a college coach, but when the opportunity to continue playing professional golf while also being the assistant coach at her alma mater was presented, she felt like it was a no-brainer. That was the awakening of her new-found passion for being a college coach. She went on to be the head coach at Princeton for 4 years, before the chance to return back to Florida State as their new head coach was given to her in 2010. And she has loved every minute of it and shares that love for coaching in this episode.

In this episode, we hear a new perspective as former Furman women's golfer Taylor Totland joins the podcast to talk about overcoming injuries as a junior, collegiate, and professional golfer. Injuries, illnesses, accidents, and setbacks are all part of being an athlete, how you come back from them is key in staying on the path to success. Taylor has battled both chronic and acute injuries throughout her golf career and learned a tremendous amount from them. We talk about knowing when to take breaks, when to push through, and how to take care of injuries to continue playing pain-free.

Just as you have been competing against some of the same girls since you first started playing golf, Coach Kory Henkes and I were in those exact same shoes 30 years ago. From day 1 of playing SC junior golf tournaments, we competed against each other and that continued once we both went to college as well, she at South Carolina and me at Furman. Coach Henkes took a little different direction after college golf and got away from the game, but she found herself back in it when she caddied on the LPGA Tour and eventually landed a job as a college coach and well the rest is history (and discussed in this episode). As the head coach there at Ole Miss, she has taken the program to record standings in the rankings and secured the program's first SEC Championship title.
