On July 27th, 1988, temperatures were reaching 102 degrees in Phoenix, Arizona. 13-year-old Myron Traylor had just returned from his paper route. Myron had begun working the paper route to help save money to give to his church for their upcoming Disney trip. Leaving their 16th street house and Nancy Lane, Myron and his mother Debbie, began the half-mile walk north to his grandparents’ house. He carried a plastic bag full of dirty clothes as he walked, which he planned on washing once he got there. Myron was also excited to talk with his younger brother on the phone, staying with a relative in California. As they walked, Myron told his mother that he was thirsty and wanted to go to the nearby OK Fish N Chips to buy a soda. Debbie agreed and told him to catch up once he was done. Debbie continued through an empty field as Myron headed toward the restaurant. Located on 16th Street and Southern Avenue, OK Fish N Chips was very quiet for a Wednesday evening. Myron didn’t see any other customers as he approached. He ordered a wild-cherry cola from worker Lena Watt and immediately began gulping down. Lena said, “You must be thirsty,” to which Myron replied by ordering another. With his second drink in hand, Myron started walking back in the direction he came. Lena waved goodbye to him, to which he wiggled his fingers back in response.
