Black and Highly Dangerous

Education

True crime television shows and podcasts have taken the world by storm. However, the stories of Black people who have been victimized are often ignored and underreported in this landscape. For today’s episode, we interview Candice Gaines, the host of Crime Noir, a podcast created to inform and increase awareness around the cases of missing, exploited, and murdered Black people. During this episode, we discuss Candice’s motivation for starting the podcast (50:10), her process for identifying and researching cases (52:21), and her most interesting cases (56:10). We then have a conversation about trends across cases (59:45), her recent Black History Month episode on lynching (1:01:12), and Fred Hampton’s killing and upcoming movie (1:07:47). We close the episode by discussing the need to cultivate leadership in young adults (1:10:55) and the importance of building connections between Black podcasters (1:20:00).  Other Topics Include:   00:30 - Catch up with Ty and Daphne  14:05 - “Oh Lawd” News  46:20  Introduction of the Topic’s Special topic  49:15 - Learn more about Candice Gaines  53:21 - Crime Junkie Controversy  1:26:03 - Ty and Daphne Reflect on the episode Resources  Crime Noir - https://www.crimenoirthepodcast.com/ Instagram -  @CrimeNoirthePodcast Atlanta Strip Club Magic City Offering 'Virtual Lap Dances' For $20 During Coronavirus Lockdown - https://www.bet.com/news/national/2020/03/20/atlanta-virtual-stirp-club.html DOJ seeks new emergency powers amid coronavirus pandemic - https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/21/doj-coronavirus-emergency-powers-140023 Kentucky Republicans quietly tighten voter restrictions as US focuses on Covid-19 - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/20/kentucky-voter-restrictions-photo-id-republicans Trump viciously attacks NBC News reporter in extended rant after being asked for message to Americans worried about coronavirus - https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/20/media/trump-rant-at-nbc-news-peter-alexander/index.html How smoking, vaping and drug use might increase risks from Covid-19 - https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/20/health/coronavirus-vaping-drugs/index.html 39-Year-Old Woman Who Tested for COVID-19 Found Dead in Kitchen Before Results Came In - https://www.complex.com/life/2020/03/39-year-old-new-orleans-woman-dies-days-after-testing-for-coronavirus Equal Justice Initiative - https://eji.org
