Weight cutting is a huge problem in Mixed Martial Arts and can have serious consequences on fighters' health and performance. There's perhaps no one more informed in this area than Dr. Oliver Barley - a sport scientist from Edith Cowan University who has spent years studying weight cutting in combat sports. On today's episode, we discuss (1) fights from UFC 249 for the first 15 minutes,(2)which factors of performance are most affected by weight cutting and which are not, (3)what physiological changes take place inside a fighter's body when they are cutting weight, and are they irreversible? (4)health consequences of dehydration, and (5)ways to combat these harmful practices in MMA promotions such as the UFC and ONE FC.
