At the top of the episode, Alex steals Groot valor. Brendan doesn't resort to ad hominem meanness (though he could've), but instead orchestrates a constructive dialogue to help Alex — who had insisted cheese belongs on a fish sandwich — wipe the remaining shit off of his face. But in the words of Ms. Begley: "You can lead a dumb horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Schtick."
