For one year – 1885, a seemingly deranged ax murderer dubbed the Midnight Assassin terrorized the people of Austin, just as the city was on the verge of becoming the cosmopolitan capitol of Texas. Panic in the city hit a fever pitch on Christmas Eve 1885, when for the first time the murderer targeted two white women. And then – poof! – he was gone!
