In this episode Dr. Melissa Lazinski discusses the Community of Inquiry (COI) model with Dr. Mary Blackinton, founding director of Nova Southeastern University (NSU)-Tampa’s DPT program. Dr. Blackinton has over 20 years experience in PT education. Prior to directing the Tampa DPT program which is taught in a blended format, she taught in NSU’s Ft. Lauderdale DPT program which is taught in a traditional format, and was director of NSU’s transitional DPT program, an online post-professional program. NSU-Tampa's DPT program is the first of its kind, taught in a completely blended format. Dr. Blackinton discusses the decision to use the COI model as the foundation for the program’s development, how it continues to be integrated in to the fabric of the program, and what has been learned in the 7 years since the program’s inception. The COI model as described in Blended Learning in Higher Education (2008, John Wiley & Sons) is a model for blended learning that includes three elements: teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence.
