Practical Approach for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Pruritus   Itchy skin can be debilitating.  It is chronic if longer than six weeks.  The itch is not like a normal itch that can be relieved by scratching.  This itch is under the skin and cannot be scratched.  Having experienced this from narcotics after a dental procedures is convincing enough to only take Tylenol and alternate with ibuprofen for dental pain control.  It can be that bad.  There are many reasons for the itching such as medication as mentioned earlier, pregnancy, malignancy, disease, allergies and psychiatric issues.  This podcast gives the Nurse Practitioner information on the causes and treatment of this debilitating symptom.
