SPMDs breakdown the return of sports highlighting the adjustments athletes are making with having to play in empty arenas, isolated from family and friends, while also balancing the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and fight for social justice. We also provide insights on ways in which athletes can maintain a high level competitive drive and performance even during difficult times like these by developing mental flexibility. In sports, stress in competition can be represented by things ranging from the opposing teams defense to distractions like the crowd noise from opposing fans. Mental fitness teaches strategies that enable an athlete or performer to maintain consistent focus without being overwhelmed by stress. We also describe the benefits of putting time and effort into developing mental flexibility which is a skill that can be developed through mental fitness. Mental Flexibility is a product of resilience and we describe simple strategies athletes can engage in to help reduce stress, maintain focus and be able to adjust when needed.
