Ep 132 Getting Rid of Urban Music Category; Now What? This is a response to the Callie Ahlgrim (from The Insider.com), “The music industry is finally getting rid of the term 'urban' to categorize Black music — but it's not enough.” The post discusses the idea that, in the midst of showing solidarity with Black issues, Republic Records—followed by the Grammys—called themselves getting rid of labels that simply group all Black artists, but don’t reflect the actual genre that they are representing. (The example is Frank Ocean winning the 2013 Grammy in the Best Urban Contemporary category for his “Channel Orange” album.) Basically, as Tyler, the Creator noted, the categories designated for Black music is the only places you will see Black artists. Typically, they will not be noted in pop, rock, country, etc., and certainly not for album of the year. –The biggest example is Beyonce’s “Lemonade” losing to Adele’s “25” at the Grammys in 2017. The question is does getting rid of the label, “urban”—a place where you would chuck ALL Black artists—going to solve the problem of this inequity? @callieahlgrim #theinsider #musiccategories #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #musicianlifestyle #blackartists #contemporaryrnb #beyonce #grammys #onpurpose What do you think? What strategies can the music industry use to exhibit true equity of art? We would LOVE to hear about it! Please share in the comments below.
