Juneteenth marks the date when the last enslaved African Americans were free! Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The emancipation proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, and not all slaves were freed until General Granger travels to Texas on June 19, 1865, to read the proclamation. The Juneteenth celebration has been around for 156 years. The celebration takes place on June 19th.
