The recent revelations of over 1,000 unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools in Canada have shocked the world. But it only represents the tip of the iceberg of a multigenerational injustice that has been described as a "cultural genocide". Between 1831 and 1996, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend boarding schools in an effort to assimilate them into Canadian society.
