When Jesus tells the parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard he is doing it as a further explanation for Peter when he asks "since we've given so much, what's in it for us?" Jesus replies by explain that the kingdom of heaven is not about what you get as a reward, but what He gives as a generous gift. The reward is not some far off heavenly place, the reward is eternal life in His presence right now. He is the reward. The sooner we realize this truth, the quicker we will actually enjoy our relationship with Him and our relationship with the church.
