Are these controls, dressed up as choices, not in fact constraints? One good way to understand why differences exists in occupational choice is cross-country studies. What technological development has shown is that jobs that focus on things, i.e. engineering and software development have higher earnings potential due to the scalability of these technologies. Could some removable burdens in maternity and child rearing effect occupational choice.
