Society & Culture

In conversation with CARNIVAL QUEEN Fiona Compton, on the roots & evolution of Carnival!“Even though we cannot physically be on the road this year, it's a great opportunity to bring in the historical, cultural and spiritual context to carnival. It's not going to take away from your experience, it's just going to add to the experience.”Fiona is a Notting Hill Carnival Ambassador and founder of @knowyourcaribbean which teaches the history and culture of the Caribbean. Fiona’s work explores the disparities in representation of the Afro Caribbean diaspora within art and mainstream media. We talked about Carnivals roots and traditions as acts of rebellion, dating back to the 17th century. How the enslaved started the tradition in response to the Lent masquerade Balls held by French & British enslavers. Carnival is more than sound systems, its a form of protest. We talked about how the 'battling' used by the reggae and calypso artists influenced the British music scene, and the meanings behind the key costume and procession traditions. We also talk about this years virtual carnival weekend 29th-31st August.I’ll be back with Season 4 in January 2021Audio Producer: Mae-Li EvansLincoln Rahamut film for Notting Hill Carnival, by Fiona ComptonMusic'reNovation by airtone (c) copyright 2019 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/airtone/60674Everyone Will Notice, No One Will Say Anything- Chris Zabriskiehttps://chriszabriskie.bandcamp.com/track/everyone-will-notice-no-one-will-say-anythingYou fiddle, I’ll burn Rome - Chris Zabriskiehttps://chriszabriskie.bandcamp.com/track/you-fiddle-ill-burn-romeThe Dark Glow of the Mountains - Chris Zabriskiehttps://chriszabriskie.bandcamp.com/album/the-dark-glow-of-the-mountainsTriptych of Snippets by septahelix (c) copyright 2019 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/septahelix/60171Notting Hill Carnival: Dawn at Ladbroke Grove-https://archive.org/details/NottingHillCarnivalDawnAtLadbrokeGrove Notting Hill Carnival 2008: Jouverthttps://archive.org/details/NottingHillCarnival2008JouvertGarifuna Drumming, Placencia, Belizehttps://freesound.org/people/RTB45/sounds/329959/duppyReggaetonSoca01-114.wavhttps://freesound.org/people/djduppy/sounds/23890/  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
