Business

In this episode of CoinList Chats, Andy Bromberg and Nic Carter, Partner at Castle Island Ventures, explore the history of stablecoins, their different models, how they’ve impacted crypto today, and what their future looks like. Stablecoins are not a new idea–in fact, they predate Bitcoin. E-gold and Liberty Reserve both attempted to create sovereign, digital currencies indexed to stable assets before being shut down by regulators in the early 2010s. While Liberty Reserve and e-gold faltered, the demand for a sovereign, digital currency indexed to a stable asset has not. Stablecoins, in their modern iterations, have become an important part of crypto and could expand the ecosystem as a whole; in the past week, it was reported that there is more value being transferred via stablecoins on top of Ethereum than the value being transferred with ETH itself. Are current implementations of stablecoins doomed to the same fate as Liberty Reserve and e-gold or has their time finally come?
