On Palm Sunday, Jesus comes to us not as a military figure on a warhorse but as a compassionate King, riding on a donkey. He is always subverting and exceeding expectations. In this triumphal entry, we see Jesus hailed as King; he is celebrated, welcomed and worshipped as King. We know that betrayal and abandonment is coming but what we see here from the disciples and from those in the crowd is obedience even when puzzled, radical and sacrificial worship and a declaration of who the true King is. The call to us is the same, will we obey even when we don’t understand, will we go out of way to honour Jesus and ultimately, is he the true King of our lives?
