The teacher knows what they are teaching for the day and the students have an understand about what it is they will be learning. They also must know why the learning material for the day is important to know. Standard Based Classrooms

The concept of equity traps evolved from a qualitative study that revealed the conscious and unconscious thinking patterns and behaviors that trap teachers, administrators, and others, preventing them from creating schools that are equitable, particularly for students of color. Although the results of this original study exposed these equity traps, merely exposing the traps is not sufficient. Hence, the purpose of this podcast is to offer a useful, pragmatic construct to teachers in educational administration departments to help them prepare their minds to be able not only to identify these equity traps but also to understand them and be able to implement strategies to avoid or eliminate these traps. Therefore, Dr. Nicki clearly defines the four equity traps—the deficit view, racial erasure, employment and avoidance of the gaze, and paralogic beliefs and behaviors—and offers practical, successful strategies to avoid or free educators from these traps.

Dr. Nicki is back with a brand new series, equity in education. Having conversations about equity requires that we look at the multifaceted complex societal, educational, political, economic  factors and how they have intersected in historical and current ways to shape teaching and learning in schools. We have to look at and consider the “individual and institutional” ways that structures, policies, ways of doing things intentionally or unintentionally marginalize some students and permit the opportunity gaps that exist.  But, there are spaces and places that close it everyday.  We want to start conversations about how we can think about equity in our everyday lives (schools at the individual and school level) and be encouraged by models of excellence. 

The Equity series: Pt.1

In a brand new episode of everything math, Dr. Nicki breaks down the importance of two step word problems for 2nd grade.  In a math word problem, the information needed to solve the problem is provided in words rather than numbers or symbols. While many of these problems have only one step, a two-step word problem requires you to solve two different equations before coming to the answer.
