p.13 TRIAL 13 エクササイズ In the 1840s, the island of Ireland suffered a famine. Because of a potato disease Ireland could not produce enough food to feed its population. About a million people died of starvation; they simply didn't have enough to eat to stay alive. The famine caused another 1.25 million people to emigrate. Many left their island home for the United States; the rest went to Canada, Australia, Chile, and other countries. Before the famine, the population of Ireland was approximately 6 million. After the great food shortage, it was about 4 million.
