After the Second World War, capitalism became embedded in national structures, most prominently the welfare state. From the 1970s onwards, however, capitalism broke through these post-war constraints. The rise of neoliberalism resulted in welfare cuts, privatisation and deregulation across the Western world. Why did this 'return of capitalism' happen? Were these developments inevitable? These are the main themes of this conversation with Professor Wolfgang Streeck.
