WrEeBmEiRxN (Webern Remix) is an integrated hardware and software performance environment designed for the interactive musical exploration of audio excerpts from Anton Webern’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, op. 5, Movement I. The piece incorporates a Nintendo Wiimote controller that serves as a performance interface for the real-time manipulation audio samples. These samples are accessed via Bluetooth from a software program on a laptop computer. The resultant sounds can be experienced in either a stereo or quadraphonic speaker configuration. Performers can thus use the gestural potential of the Wiimote to create a unique sonic world similar to the way a string player uses a bow to create a variety of unique sounds on their instrument. Because WrEeBmEiRxN incorporates the unique features of a musical instrument, installation art and remix composition, the piece could potentially be presented in a variety of performance spaces and contexts.
