Making Abortion Unthinkable

While Jesus is teaching in the temple, the Pharisees attempt to impale Jesus on the Horns of a Dilemma. Placing a woman in front of him who they claim was caught in the act of adultery, they challenge Jesus with the fact that the Law demands she be put to death by stoning. They ask him, "Should this woman be put to death?". They believe that they have caught him and that no matter how Jesus responds they will have a charge to bring against him.

The Feast of Booths was one of the seven annual feasts that God commanded the nation Israel to celebrate each year. It was a seven day feast that started with a sabbath day of rest and ended with an additional Sabbath day of rest. The purpose of the feast was to thank God for the harvest and to stand as a reminder to God’s provision. How He had carried them out of Egypt and provided for them as they lived in tents in the desert.

This morning we are going to glimpse the brilliance of Jesus on display. He so brilliantly handles a conflict at the Feast of Booths that it causes many who witness it to come to the conclusion that he is the Messiah.

God Keeps His Promises

As we follow the story of our Lord there is definitely a sense of urgency in the passage before us. It is fall, 29AD, three years into Jesus’ public ministry. Jesus must leave the safety of Galilee for the dangers of Jerusalem in order to observe the Feast of Booths. Jewish leadership want to kill Him (Jn. 7:30). After His brothers leave, Jesus follows, but privately. This may explain why He takes the road less traveled through Samaria.

No Time To Waste

As we pick up Yeshua’s story, it is Fall of 29AD, late August or early September. In a few weeks, devout Jews from all over Israel and the Mediterranean seaboard will gather in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Booths, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus has not been to Jerusalem since the previous feasts in April. He has limited His ministry to the area around the Lake of Galilee in northern Israel.

The twelve disciples of Jesus had been having an ongoing conversation. Well, it was more than just a conversation; it was a full-on heated disagreement. Who would be the greatest in the kingdom? They couldn’t come to an agreement, so they wanted Jesus to decide. Jesus did, but not in the way they expected.

A Fundamental Misunderstanding

By the time Jesus begins his public ministry, the Jewish people have been eagerly awaiting the Messiah for over 1000 years! There were numerous prophecies about the Messiah (Anointed One) who would come, set the Jewish people free from their oppressors and set up the new kingdom of Israel. As a result, the nation of Israel had developed some strong expectations regarding who the Messiah would be, and what he would do.

Adjusting Expectations

Throughout scripture, we see that all born again believers in Jesus are disciple-makers. Like the fishermen on Barangonan, there are two types of disciple-makers that we observe throughout the New Testament. The ‘as you go about your business’ disciple-makers and The ‘disciple-making is my business’ disciple-makers.

Two Types of Disciple Makers

By now, most all of us understand that God does not forbid the drinking of alcohol; He forbids drunkenness (Ephesians 5:15-21). When you are drunk, you are out of control of your mind, your emotions and your bodily functions. When you are drunk you are extremely vulnerable to the forces around you and to the evil inclinations within you.

Who Has Woe?

​In Pride, there is no honest self-evaluation, there is no desire to improve, there is no recognition of shortcomings and inward sin, there is no bending the knee in confession or repentance.

Pride Is The Problem

The Biblical term for living according to God’s Word is righteousness. If you do what God tells you to do, you are a righteous person. If you do not do what God tells you to do, you are a wicked person. To do right is to obey God’s law. Proverbs has a lot to say about righteousness. There are 102 verses in Proverbs that speak about righteousness. The up-shot of all these verses is that doing right in the eyes of God is the best way to live.
