Other than his work on “The Comey Rule” and the upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” television adaptation titled “Clarice”, Kurtzman also works on a little franchise called Star Trek. This week, Kurtzman sat down with the Hollywood Reporter’s “TV’s Top 5” to discuss everything he’s been working on - and while we may or may not be excited for his other projects - well...let’s just say we aren’t partnered with the Thomas Harris Podcast Network. Kurtzman spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which is of no surprise - the third season’s premiere is set for October 15th. When asked about how long the series would likely run, Kurtzman was frank in both the series' praise and direction - as well as in the Showrunners commitment to keeping Trek fresh. Along those same lines, Kurtzman noted that he had plans with ViacomCBS for Star Trek that reached - currently - to 2027. When asked whether he was afraid of over-saturating the market with Star Trek, Kurtzman expressed that he felt the world needed the franchise, and that diversity in programming was the key to keeping it relevant. Lower Decks NYCC Panel Last week, in episode 481 of Priority One, we talked about the New York Comic Con Star Trek happenings. But if you’ll remember, we skipped coverage of the Lower Decks panel because it was spoiler heavy. You’ve had a week to catch up, but if you still haven’t watched the season finale of “Lower Decks”, skip to Star Trek Gaming! -- SPOILERS INCOMING -- During the Comic Con panel, Showrunner Mike McMahan and the cast of “Lower Decks” talked about what happened in season 1, and where their characters were heading for season 2 - sans, sadly, Fred Tatasciore’s Lieutenant Shaxs. There were some fun ideas on how to bring back the battle-hardened Bajoran - and discussion on whether he was really dead - or just mostly dead. About half way through the panel, the cast was joined by series special guest Jonathan Frakes, and that’s when things got predictably spoiler-y. As it turns out, Frakes spoiled plot points for co-star Jack Quaid before the show even started. Of Riker, and his appearance on Lower Decks, Showrunner Mike McMahan stressed the characters' fun attitude and joy.  And if you’re concerned that Boimler will mysteriously find his way back to the Cerritos for the Season 2 premiere, fear not. On Youtube, McMahan explained his thoughts behind using the Pakled as the finale’s “Big Bads”.  He continued those musings with Variety, before moving on to spoilers - and cheeky possible-spoilers. ”We’ll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we’ll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well. Boimler has been talking about moving on to bigger and better all first season, and now we’re going to see what happens when he gets what he wants.”. McMahan said Councilor Troi would NOT make in appearance in Season 2. But when asked if OTHER TNG Alumn would join, noted, ”That, my friend, I will not tell you, I would say, feels like a pretty good chance of it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxWq77kgg3Q McMahan told Variety that the second season of Lower Decks would dive deeper into sexuality - Mariner’s specifically - saying ”For me and for the writers as we were making this, we didn’t intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis. Every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual, in a way. That being said, I am not the most amazing person at writing those kind of stories. I think we get a little bit better about it in the second season.” Mike McMahan Keeps Talking Lower Decks Heading to Inverse, McMahan may have answered a question we’ve asked on Priority One. Could Lower Decks be an off-kilter representation of the Cerritos’ adventures through Starfleet gossip? ”If you’re in Starfleet, and all this stuff has happened, it would be like if you were in the military now, and you were reading about — or hearing about – [real events] either officially or word of mouth through people who have been on ships, or people catching up. There are so many people on these ships, of course they’re going to talk to each other. They’re going to take real life events and put those into media. I think what I’m trying to say is there is no one unifying theory of communication. To me, it’s more that there’s going to be mosaic of communication. There’s things that are going to be popularized, there’s things in the news, there’s things you’ll learn at Starfleet academy there’s going to be stuff you’ll hear rumors about. It’s out there and it’s going to be known.” If you’re wondering about the “First Contact” uniforms making an appearance on Lower Decks, McMahan had an answer for that too! ”I’m very fascinated with the idea that we have replicators [in Star Trek] that can make anything. But who’s designing that stuff? It becomes like intellectual items, like why aren’t they all eating Lincoln’s last meal? The more you look at it, some ships would have different stuff, which is why you’d want to get the thing with the purple stripe on it, which goes all the way down to uniforms. I mean why is Starfleet even in uniforms? It’s not to make them camouflaged and they’re not strictly military. It’s representational of who Starfleet is.” STLV 2020 CANCELLED We’ve got some breaking news tonight, thanks to our Associate Producer Shane Hoover. According to NBC news affiliate Las Vegas 3, the official Star Trek Las Vegas convention has been cancelled. From the website, "Creation Entertainment, the company that brings the Trek convention each year, has announced that the December 2020 show is not going to happen due to pandemic-related reasons. The Star Trek convention will resume next year in Las Vegas on August 11 - 15 at the Rio.” Though we couldn't find any OFFICIAL release from Creation Entertainment at the time of this writing, their previous STLV 2020 page is no longer accessible. Instead it gives way to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek - and creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th Birthday - in 2021. Keep your ear right here for more on the news. Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Venture(Beat) into the Final Frontier By Thomas Reynolds Newer captains may find it hard to believe (and older captains harder to accept), but Cryptic Studios opened its doors before the NX-01 first left spacedock. This year Cryptic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and last week tech business magazine VentureBeat published an interview with Cryptic CEO Stephen D’Angelo. In the interview D’Angelo shows off his toy cabinet (he has a Galaxy-X model, not that we’re jealous or anything), and speaks about thirteen years with a game company driven by outside IP. Saying specifically of Star Trek Online,  ”Star Trek is a universe more than a storytelling style. We’ve tried to, like I said, give people an experience in that universe that captures the look, the feel, and the stories, but going for the diversity the universe offers”. D’Angelo also talked about being STO’s executive producer when it went free-to-play, the changing nature of the game’s playerbase, and the company’s history in the MMO space as a whole. The Titan Reprises A Familiar Tune? By Thomas Reynolds Captains, be advised: the Trek nuggets in this segment may spoil your dinner. Proceed with caution. Last week’s season finale of Star Trek Lower Decks captivated us with drama, tragedy, callbacks, comedy–you know, all that jazz. While the show taketh away (RIP Shaxs), it might also giveth STO players something they’ve wanted for a very long time. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account dropped a screenshot of the in-game Titan and quoted its swingin’ captain’s call to action. Admittedly, this doesn’t explicitly say what is going on with the Titan in 2411. Cryptic may have simply been capitalizing on the ship’s newfound public awareness. However, we had it from Ambassador Kael himself that “there’s something coming from Lower Decks soon-ish,” but he couldn’t tell us about it lest he ”spoil a surprise in the last episode.” It’s hard not to imagine a T6 Luna-class is finally in the cards, and  its holodeck has the Bourbon Street Bar already loaded. If you have, you might've noticed some of the escaping ships really seem to like the Utopia Planitia Starbase, because they never leave it. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account also confirmed that ships were getting stuck within the starbase, which means they could never leave and the TFO could never end. Cryptic says it’ll fix the issue with the October 13th patch, and the event will be extended by another week to make up for the bug. As we noted at the end of the story, Trekmovie promised more with the Actor/director - and they delivered! Prepare yourself for a trek-nugget feast. First, Frakes spoke about Picard season 2 - noting that he expected to start shooting in January - before admitting,in regards to story ”I don’t know what the plan is for season two.”. BUT, he did have some interesting news about Riker’s appearance in season 1 of the series, telling Anthony Pascale of Trekmovie ”So I was directing episodes four and five. The nightclub episode and the one with the nuns [...] And there was no mention of this “Nepenthe” story, which ended up being episode seven. Then somewhere late in the shooting of those two episodes[...] they called and said, “What do you think about doing this?”[...]But it was not part of the plan. When they broke the season, there was no Rikers-in-the-cabin thing. It happened somewhere during a re-break..” Later, Frakes was asked about directing future trek series, including Short Treks. When asked to pitch an idea for the short-form series,  Frakes replied ”I was just about to say musical. I’m dying to do something in that world anyway, ever since Maurice Hurley, who was our showrunner briefly on Next Gen, took me to lunch and said, “What do you like?” I said, “I like jazz. and I like baseball and I play the trombone.” The next thing you know there I was in the holodeck with Minuet. I think that a musical, especially in a Short Treks, would be spectacular. I think it’d be wonderful.” Frakes Continues With Trekmovie While Frakes expressed interest in directing Strange New Worlds, he admitted to knowing nothing about the series  - BUT he DID shed a little light on the oft forgotten Section 31 series. ”I actually had Boey [Yeon Kim] and Erica [Lippoldt] with me on The Ready Room with Wil Wheaton because they wrote 303 of Discovery and they’re very optimistic. But obviously, it made sense to the network to do Pike’s show before Section 31.” In it’s next installment, Trekmovie spoke to Frakes about directing “Sub Rosa”, and his thoughts on “Code of Honor”. In regards to the season 7 episode Sub Rosa, of which Frakes directed, he reflected on how he approaches sub-par scripts ”my philosophy [...] is ‘I’m going make the best version of this show that I can make.’ There’s nothing gained by admitting ‘Oh, my God, this story doesn’t make any sense. This is ludicrous.’ [...] If you take those notes to the producer of the show and point them out more than once, as I have done, and that producer or showrunner doesn’t feel the same way, then you’ve got to suck it up and make the best episode you can make.”. Frakes was frank about “Code of Honor”, echoing many fans sentiments when he said ”I think they should take it out of the [streaming catalog]. I think it is a great time to make that kind of – as small as it is – to make that kind of a statement would be fabulous.[...]Maybe it should be included with an appropriate statement of reason. A proof of concept. This is not who we are. This is not what we stand for. It’s an embarrassment to the franchise and Gene [Roddenberry] would want us to do this. Something like that.” Sir Patrick’s Sonnets Wrap Sir Patrick Stewart is a gift to humanity. He proved it once again on his social media channels when, at the start of the pandemic, he began reciting Shakespeare’s sonnets. The sonnets started at the behest of Stewart’s wife, Sunny Ozell, and quickly became a shining light in dark times. Well, the four day virtual event began Thursday, October 8th … and on noon/eastern that day, Star Trek took the virtual center stage. The hour-long video included three panels: First was a discussion with the Lower Decks cast and crew moderated by Wil Wheaton. That panel, we’ll save for next week since it contains spoilers for the season finale of Lower Decks Following Lower Decks was a Star Trek Discovery Panel that featured several actors from Season 3. During the segment, the actors shared some information about the emotional and mental state of their characters after having jumped over 900 years into the future. We were also given the opportunity to meet Ian Alexander and Blu Del Barrio. And, although they couldn’t go into too much detail about their characters, we at least had an opportunity to get to know them as actors. Last, but certainly not least -- the BIG announcement that exploded all the social medias --- Kate Mulgrew is returning as Captain Kathrine Janeway for the Nickelodeon Star Trek Animated Series: Prodigy. Equipping pieces of the deflector-shield-engine-core-set buffs a bewildering array of ship stats, including exotic damage, energy weapon damage, and control expertise. However it also unlocks the devastating Weaponized Mycelial Emitter, putting J’ula’s devastating doom shroom power in players’ hands. House Divided: Synth Wave (TFO) By Thomas Reynolds Well, that’s segways nicely into the next piece of content to drop this Tuesday…. April 5th, 2385 (for anyone still hung up on the human Gregorian calendar) will always be remembered as the day Mars burned. The synth attack on Utopia Planitia mystifies and disturbs galactic society to this day, and the Khitomer Alliance is taking steps to ensure it never happens again.The new “Synth Wave” TFO, now on PC, puts captains in a holographic simulation of Mars’s desperate defense (similar to the Battle of the Binary Stars). Of course, the outcome is inevitable. But if the Alliance can learn anything from this tragedy, then 92,143 Federation citizens will not have died for nothing. Star Trek Online: Tier 6 Upgrades By Thomas Reynolds Do you wish your T6 Juggernaut could have that New Ship Smell again? Well, Star Trek Online has something better than a pile of air defresheners: available starting October 6th, the new Experimental Upgrade token will add a universal console slot, device slot, and active ship trait slot to whichever T5-U or T6 ship it’s applied. Once you do that, the upgrade will be freely available for all ships of that type on your account. Each token will sell for 1000 ZEN, or in bundles of 3 for 2000 ZEN. But from October 6th through November 5th, players can receive one free token for their account. T6 Mirror Warship By Shane Hoover Bust out the knives, agonizers and goatees, because STO’s latest Infinity Lockbox Ship is taking us back through the Mirror. In the three ad series, Captain Picard portrayer Sir Patrick faces off against Luke Skywalker Stager Mark Hamill in Connect Four, Air Hockey, and some - well - let’s call them deep-rooted family issues. Besides talking about the similarities and differences between the two franchises, the pair recalled their time on-set. Sir Patrick discussed his first day of shooting, saying ”I was doing my first scene where I appeared on camera as Jean-Luc Picard. I was walking down one of the Enterprise corridors, and one of the sliding automated doors opened on my left and there was Commander Riker played by Jonathan Frakes. The script had him saying something to me, and I was just supposed to nod and then walk away. The director called, “Cut!” Then Jonathan yelled out, “That’s what they call British face-acting!” The whole crew laughed, and I remember gratefully thinking that I was going to be spending all of this time with funny people. Stewart had some interesting comments regarding his unknowing inspiration for Captain Picard, telling Men’s Journal in part ”I trained and worked out for years before I ever got in front of the camera playing Picard. For every gentleman from the outside looking in, he was a superstar. Jonathan Frakes Talks Disco Season 3 Sir Patrick’s “The Next Generation” co-star - and prolific television director - Jonathan Frakes Rikered a chair to talk with friends of the network, Trekmovie.com. Hot off his Galaxycon Event, Frakes chatted with Anthony Pascale about the characters, events, and shooting of Star Trek: Discovery, season three - and in true Frakes fashion, probably told us more than he should have. When asked to confirm his directing of three episodes this season, Frakes gave away some plot beats, saying ”Yes, I did. I actually just rewatched 303 a couple of days ago. Season three is really wonderful on Discovery, by the way. So the first episode is Michael Burnham alone in Iceland [for location shoot], which is a foreign land. And she meets “Book” [David Ajala]. The second episode is the entire crew on Discovery. And the third episode, which is the one I was fortunate enough to get, is their reunion. And it is very heavy on the emo.” Later in the interview, Frakes discussed Trek’s newest stars. He showered praise on Book actor David Ajala before moving on to the newly announced Blu del Barrio (Adira)). ”Blu is so well cast that as the character reveals themself, I think they’ll be a new favorite. Much like Tilly—do you remember how offbeat and non-Star Trek Tilly felt in the beginning? Blu brings a different dynamic and a different color totally, but a brand new color to the palette of the group. Much in the way Tig [Notaro] did.” Star Trek: Discovery’s Pilot Doesn’t Soar on CBS In episode 476 of Priority One - released on September 4th - we told you about Star Trek: Discovery’s re-airing of its pilot - “The Vulcan Hello”. Want to know how that went? Are you sure? “The Vulcan Hello”, which originally aired on September 24, 2017, was repeated for terrestrial television audiences exactly three years later - September 24, 2020. Back in 2017, the series premiere - which aired at 8:30pm EST - pulled in a solid 9.5 million same-day-viewers, according to USA Today. Three years later, Variety reported  that viewership had dropped to a disappointing 1.7 million viewers, losing out to ABC’s season 5 premiere of “The Match Game” (2.9 million viewers). So what does that mean? Well, right now, it only means that “The Vulcan Hello” had 1.7 million viewers.  The three year old episode was, as mentioned previously, a repeat - even to Network television viewers. There’s no need to panic. Right? H. Jon Benjamin Talks Tribbles One of Star Trek’s most divisive episodes seems to be the Season 2 episode of “Short Treks” titled “The Trouble With Edward”. From the IMDB summary “Newly minted Captain Lynne Lucero is excited to take command of the U.S.S. Cabot. That is, until she meets Edward Larkin, an ornery scientist who believes he has found a revolutionary new use for tribbles.” You remember Larkin, right? The guy who wanted to breed Tribbles for food. That Edward Larkin. This week, Edward Larkin himself - H. Jon Benjamin - did absolutely nothing to ingratiate himself with the episode detractors. Benjamin sat down with telegram.com to talk about Bob’s Burgers, Archer, and “The Trouble With Edward”. Benjamin admitted to report Craig S. Semon ”I never thought I would make it in the ‘Star Trek’ universe but I did.  I was a ‘Star Trek’ fan when I was a kid. It was really cool. I was thrilled to be asked.” On playing the - unique - character, Benjamin said ”It wasn’t particularly hard to play that guy, because he was oblivious. I’m not sure he knew how despicable he was. So that was the fun of it. From what I gathered, there are some ‘Star Trek’ fans that took issue with that the way tribbles were discovered. You never know if Scotty drunk ate one.” Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Cryptic Studios Announces Collaboration with Gameheads This week, it was announced that Cryptic Studios - the game development studio that designs Neverwinter, Champions Online, the upcoming Magic: Legends, and -- of course -- Star Trek Online --- has teamed up with a local organization called Gameheads. What’s important about this particular nonprofit organization, is that it welcomes low-income youth and youth of color between the ages of 15 to 24 in the Bay Area into a program that trains them in video game design, development, and DevOps.  Together, these young adults will work with experienced game developers at Cryptic to  “provide discipline-specific discussions, panels, and presentations and mentor students in their desired fields, such as Environment Art, Level Design, or Narrative Design.” Additionally, Cryptic has made a financial donation to Gameheads as well as the NAACP Personally, I believe this is an excellent partnership. You see, there is substantial evidence that points to a systemically racial barrier that makes it incredibly difficult for low-income youth of color to move up and out of poverty. Additionally, there’s evidence establishing inherent racism in technology… and no, I’m not saying your toaster burns your toast cuz you’re Carribean. But, what I am saying is that current algorithms -- those that drive facial recognition technology for example -- have time and again misidentified individuals of color. You see, to the ghost in the machine, anyone who’s not white pretty much looks the same…. But, the thing is… that ghost is programmed by an industry led -- predominantly - by white people. So, helping students break into the tech industry is one positive way of ensuring that the tech industry remains inclusive and equitable… for the consumer and for developers.. A New Event! A New Event Prize Concept! By Shane Hoover In a blog posted Tuesday September 29th, Ambassador Kael announced an upcoming event to accompany the next Year of Klingon content release. This “Widening Gyre” event runs from October 6th through November 5th on PC. No details are provided yet about the Event itself, but the Grand Prize is breaking new ground for STO events. By completing 20 daily progress cycles in the Widening Gyre, Captains can obtain an entire 4 piece space equipment set, the Imperial Rift Space Set. So far details are scant on the set pieces, but the descriptions provided in the blog point toward a Science-based set that is trying to synergize control abilities with energy weapons. It’s too soon to give you a verdict on how we think it’ll perform, but stay tuned, Captains. Once the stats are released, you can bet we’ll be sharing our evaluations on the next show! It is said that reputation is everything. Ah, the daily grind. It’s just part of the MMO experience, right? You run the same missions over and over to gain a reward that takes days, months or years to complete. However, if you’re tired of grinding marks for another reputation system in STO, then you will be pleased with the latest news. You can now skip the grind. Well, you can skip some of the grind. Well, you can now skip some of the grind in one section of one part of the systems available to grind in STO.  Now available for purchase -  a Tier V Reputation buyout from the Zen store.  Starting at 3,000 Zen, you can pass go and proceed immediately to Tier V for a single reputation on a single character. Although, the price is reduced proportionately, depending on how much progress in that reputation you’ve already made. For example, if you’ve made it to Tier 3 and just are not able or willing to continue earning those marks and running the daily project, then the price of 3,000 zen is reduced proportionately. Keep in mind, if you thought you were getting around the grind - ha - nope. You will still have to spend at least 60 days getting to Tier 6. But, this is manageable with the Tier V mark reward amount, since you get at least 600 marks when you achieve Tier V - but you still have to run those daily projects What does this mean for you, the player - what type of player are you? New: Players new to the game should avoid this purchase as the process of leveling the reputation is something you will need to do anyway, unless you plan on buying it for all reputations, and even then, because this only goes up to tier 5 which isn’t even half the progress to tier 6.  Casual: Casual players may feel like this is a decent deal, skipping what seems like a significant in-game time sink. But if you consider yourself a casual player, 3000 Zen is probably not a small investment for you, and that can get you things you’ll use to play the game. Like an account-wide T6 ship, for instance. And if you’re paying to avoid playing the game, then...is this really the hobby for you? Experienced: Experienced players will have a better understanding of exactly what they are getting out of the purchase and be better placed to evaluate if it’s worth the price to skip ahead a little. But in general? No. No player should purchase this.  Elite: Honestly, this seems like it’d be heresy to an elite player. Who already has all their reps finished anyway. The awards ceremony, which ran from September 14th to September 19th,  “honor[ed] outstanding artistic and technical achievement in a variety of television program genres, guest performances in weekly series, as well as exceptional work in the animation, reality and documentary categories.” The awards streamed throughout the week, and aired its final night on FXX ”Virtually-Live”. All nominees were required to pre-record an acceptance speech, the winners being played and the rest discarded. There was even a snafu when announcing the “Guest Actor in a Drama” - Ron Cephas Jones won, but Jason Bateman was announced the winner. Star Trek’s showing at the awards was much like the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards Show and 2020 itself - a bit of a letdown. First, the good. On Wednesday September 16th, Trek took home its first Emmy Award. The crew behind “Star Trek: Picard” won the “Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special” for it’s work on the episode “Stardust City Rag”. The episode faced - and bested - some stiff competition, including  “The Mandalorian” and “ Westworld”. So you reward the audience with a thing that they love.” Hawley With EW.com Later in the week, on September 18th, Entertainment Weekly released another article with the Writer/creator/showrunner to once again discuss Fargo’s fourth season - and Star Trek.  When asked about the script, Hawley explained ”I can't say much about it except it's an argument for why humanity should prevail and why we should come together and unite, which I think is important – to look at the United Federation of Planets and remember at some point Earth is what we are now and then we invented warp technology and met extraterrestrial life and everybody came together. But how? How did we get from where we are now to where they are then? And what happens if that utopian reality is challenged? There are times of challenge and war when we have to prove our values all over again. Maybe there's a time in the Federation where this ideal is challenged and it won't survive on its own. This week we’re going to cover the virtual panels of the newest Star Trek series - Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and the upcoming Strange New Worlds. But first we want to know “Star Trek: Discovery” Panel Following a streaming schedule that featured episodes from the entire Star Trek catalogue, the team turned its focus to pre-recorded panels and interviews - and the first on the docket was “Star Trek: Discovery”. The panel was introduced by series lead Sonequa Martin-Green - who presented Discovery’s official Season 3 trailer - before handing the reins to host Mica Burton. Burton moderated a panel that featured Star Trek boss Alex Kurtzman, Discovery Show runner Michelle Paradise, and series new-comer David Ajala. Alex Kurtzman discussed the state of the federation nearly 1000 years in Discovery’s future, and how Star Trek’s message today jives with Gene Roddenberry’s message from 1966. In the trailer, “Book” - played by panel attendee and Star Trek newcomer David Ajala - notes that Starfleet suffered a decline during a period called “the burn”. This week, news broke that Star Trek was FINALLY introducing BOTH a Trans AND Non-Binary Character to the main cast of Discovery.  Trek’s first non-Binary character - portrayed by Blu del Barrio - spoke with glaad.org about the role, saying ”When we meet Adira, they're suffering from memory loss. You want to add content from Discovery (whose third season starts this October), but your game is Kelvin Timeline-only. And to not be Kelvin Timeline-only, you have to add that content from Discovery. That, captains, is called a Patch-22. Now we know 2020 has been...a bit much. Believe it or not, it’s only been two weeks since ViacomCBS gave Fleet Command developer Scopely free reign of the franchise’s TV and film content, and we weren’t expecting anything to follow so soon. Surprise! Fleet Command Patch 22, which Scopely announced on September 8th, will begin the game’s first Prime Timeline story arc in the era of Discovery. Michael Burnham, Stamets, Saru, and the NCC-1031 itself join Fleet Command’s playable roster, with new random Anomalies and story missions available through a Disco-specific Battle Pass. The patch will also improve the user interface for Battle Report storage and guarantees an Exchange Armada spawn rate in all Exchange systems. Star Trek Timelines Giveaways and Takeaways Fleet Command isn’t the only Trek game getting in on the Star Trek Day festivities. Until September 15th, Star Trek Timelines is bringing back player-favorite temporary achievements for increased grind rewards. However these achievements now have tiers, so the more tasks you complete, the more dilithium and premiums you earn. The slogan - “If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you’ll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre’s “B Positive” and Queen Latifa’s “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”’s first season! CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said of the revised line-up “This is hardly a traditional fall season, but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production. Based on our current timeline, we hope to start rolling out our previously announced fall series as they become available in November.” So when will you be able to catch Discovery over-the-air? Starting Thursday September 17th, Discovery will air from 10PM to 11PM, following the popular “Big Brother” and “Love Island”. Chris Pine Is (WAS) Still Interested in a Star Trek IV Star Trek legend and Twitter connoisseur William Shatner has a history of changing his mind. He wants to play Kirk, Kirk’s story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we’re going. But what about the other actor who’s played Starfleet’s youngest Captain. What about Chris Pine? We ask because this week, August 27th, the new podcast “Things are Going Great For Me With Claude Deering” launched an interview with A-lister Chris Pine. During the interview, the 40 year-old actor discussed his newest film - “Wonder Woman 1984” - partying with his mom, and of course, Star Trek. If you’re a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. Pine told Deering "I haven't heard anything. I mean, I get asked these questions all the time. I'm like the last person to find anything out. So, I've heard -- what have I heard? Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he's going to do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast. So, I really don't know. I know that Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and kind of a major corporate restructuring. So hopefully, when all that dust settles, something concrete will come out of it, and we'll get to work. I'd love to do it." If you’re a Kelvin fan, great news - right? George Takei Talks To StarTrek.com Another social-media guru straight   outta    Connie had some interesting things to say about his time on Star Trek, and whether or not he’d be interested in a return - though we shouldn't call it a comeback - he’s been here for years. George Takei, Star Trek’s own Hikaru Sulu, sat down with StarTrek.com and discussed his favorite episode of Star Trek’s Original series. Takei cited “The Naked Time”, saying ”I loved being unchained from that damn console. Episode after episode, there I am. They may have given me promotions, from the Lieutenant, to becoming the Lieutenant Commander, and then Commander, but I'm still there at that same console, saying “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” Well, at least in that episode, I showed them that I had a life beyond just “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” I can fence.” Takei also revealed some on-set drama regarding that episode, telling Bex April May ”Well, the fencing was an important scene, and I didn't know how to fence, either. I had to take formal fencing lessons a couple of weeks before we were to shoot that.[...] Jimmy Doohan, who played Scotty, was a very perceptive person. He heard the sound of my stamping and panting, and huffing and puffing, and walked all the way from the opposite end of the soundstage [...] Just as I'm lunging, he appears behind the flat, and I miss him, literally by inches, from his nose. James Mackinnon on Creating - And Being - Picard’s Borg This week, Star Trek’s  “For Your Consideration” interviews continued. This time SYFY Wire spoke with a behind-the-scenes star - Dept head Prosthetics and Special Makeup Effects James MacKinnon. And as it turns out, MacKinnon is in front of the camera as well! The five-time Emmy winner - and this year’s nominee for his role as Makeup director on “Star Trek: Picard” - talked about his secret weapon - and it’s bananas  ”Yes. [Laughs] Bananas are my go-to for inside flesh. Whenever you slice somebody open, there’s fatty tissue and other layers of stuff. If you sculpt as deep as possible, and add a little bit of banana, little chunks of banana, with a little bit of [fake] blood, it makes it look like fatty tissue…. So I always have a banana in the trailer every day, just in case you need a little bit of meaty tissue...” Mackinnon also talked about his time in front of the camera, and how it affects interactions with the fans ”My assistants Richard [Redlefsen] and Alexei [Dmitriew] slipped me in during lunch, because we didn’t want production to wait. Our lunch break is 45 minutes, and this makeup usually takes an hour and a half, but we pounded through! I’m a very TNG-looking Borg, so it’s a bit of a throwback….” Bob Picardo Joins “To Meet the Faces You Meet” Finally this week, we’d like to mention that former Star Trek Doctor and all-around-great-science-ambassador Robert Picardo has landed a new role on the Kickstarter film "To Meet the Faces You Meet". From the "To Meet the Faces You Meet" kickstarter page, the synopsis states  The military thought they had created the ultimate weapon－a soldier (Friz) linked symbiotically with an artificially intelligent spaceship (MEAD: Mobile Extrasensory Autonomous Deceptor) with the ability to project illusions so real that they cannot be distinguished from reality. Together, Friz and MEAD became the most deadly fighting force the world had seen. There was one problem: An errant bit of programming instilled MEAD with a conscience and pacifist tendencies that made him and his human symbiote useless for military purposes. Scheduled for "decommission," Friz and MEAD go on the run, pursued by bounty hunters and an admiral with a personal axe to grind. Picardo will play ADMIRAL GILLETTE, the antagonist of the film. Star Trek Timelines: Wolves and Wraiths From September 3rd through 7th, Star Trek Timelines players will conclude their human-Romulan history studies in the “Restoration” Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event, the last chapter in the Capitoline Wolf Mega-Event. The ranked reward is sure to satisfy any player’s vaulting ambitions: Her most Imperial Majesty, and returning 5-star crew member, Emperor Georgiou. The new 5-star RomuLannister sister Narissa heads the event crew, along with 5-star Captain Erika Hernandez, and returning 4-star Rura Penthe Reed doing his best Patrick Bateman deep cut. Timelines also begins its Haunted Heroines campaign on September 3rd, featuring 5-star Pah-wraith Keiko and 4-star Tieran Possessed Kes. Disruptor Beam has yet to release details about the four-week event’s narrative. However it’s safe to say the current theme of confronting one’s past isn’t going away soon. Star Trek Fleet Command: Scopely Names a New Chief Business Officer Scopely, the developer behind Star Trek Fleet Command, purchased FoxNext Games back in January, and that acquisition has led to a new announcement. As reported on website GameDaily.biz, Scopely have named former FoxNext president Aaron Loeb as their new Chief Business Officer. Describing his position, Loeb said his responsibility is driving Scopely’s core business of game services. Speaking to GameDaily, he said,  Somehow, rooted in our industry’s history, we came to a belief that ‘fun’ is the opposite of ‘business’ … My experiences have taught me to recognize that when done right, ‘fun’ and ‘business’ are a near total overlap.  Loeb praises Scopely’s fearless approach to creative game development.  He goes so far as singling out Star Trek Fleet Command, saying  It’s a game that was given the time and support it needed to achieve the greatness that the team knew was within their grasp. TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Alex Kurtzman Talks Short Treks - AGAIN Alex Kurtzman and Deadline go together like the proverbial peanut butter and jelly, or is it peanut butter and chocolate, or is it chocolate and milk. Regardless, Kurtzman once again sat down with Deadline to talk turkey about Short Treks, the franchise, and his old friend. Turkey and gravy? Kurtzman discussed the birth of Short Treks, telling Deadline they had wanted initially to drop Season 2 before we would be ready to deliver everything we needed to for Season 1, and I said, ” Okay, well how about this? If you delay the drop of Season 2, what we can do is some Short Treks. We’ll use our sets, and try this interesting experiment and see if it works, and it will buy us some time for Star Trek awareness to remain in the cultural conversation.” They said, “Sure, okay. Let’s try it,” and we started out doing five, and people really liked them. When asked about what was the most difficult aspect of Short Treks, Kurtzman pointed to animation, but spoke highly of old friend Michael Giacchino - and how the composer's knowledge of the medium helped. what was great about working with Michael was that because he had done this already, he was very prepared for the process, and gave me a headline up front about, “Okay, you’ve got about three or four off-ramps along the way, and then we can’t change it. So, let’s make sure that we have these regular check-ins that allow us to make sure we are agreeing, and heading down the right road, so that when we get to what will become an irreversible moment, we’re feeling great about it.” And that was awesome. Well, maybe I don’t, but we have a couple of law type people here, so this conversation should be interesting! In a story that broke last week, Video Game developer Anas Abdin lost his Second Circuit Court case against CBS and Netflix. Our script isn’t going to deep-dive into this, because frankly the writer doesn’t know as much as the two experts currently present. In short, the first filing of the suit - which alleged Abdin’s in-development point-and-click space-faring adventure game featuring a gay couple and intergalactic tardigrades was infringed on by “Star Trek: Discovery”’s first season story line and characters - was dismissed by the court for the Southern District of New York.  On August 17th, Abdin’s second go at litigation was as successful as his first, with the judge saying in part “Abdin’s space-traveling tardigrade is an unprotectable idea because it is a generalized expression of a scientific fact—namely, the known ability of a tardigrade to survive in space […] By permitting Abdin to exclusively own the idea of a space-traveling tardigrade, this Court would improperly withdraw that idea from the public domain and stifle creativity naturally flowing from the scientific fact that tardigrades can survive the vacuum of space.” Do you want to know the law? In a Statement on their website, Destination said in part Due to government restrictions it is with sadness we must postpone this October's Destination Star Trek Germany event in Dortmund. [...] We still plan to centre [OUR NEXT CONVENTION] around Voyager’s anniversary, since it’s not fair that we were not all able to celebrate it properly this year and we know they are still really looking forward to seeing you, as you are them! WAY BACK in Priority One Podcast episode 344 we talked about the possibility of a Galaxy Quest television series. Those hopes were dashed with the unfortunate passing of the great Alan Rickman. This week, Collider talked with would-be showrunner of the Galaxy Quest series - Dean Parisot - about his upcoming “Bill and Ted” sequel, but the conversation took a turn towards Galaxy Quest. Parisot confirmed the series was in planning, and that Alan Rickman’s passing was the reason for the shows cancellation - but he was vague about whether it was REALLY cancelled or mostly cancelled, saying “We couldn’t go forward after that because we loved Alan, who was the sweetest, most generous person on the planet. We just couldn’t see it without him. We’re still talking about it all the time. Who knows.” Later, Parisot discussed the general plot of the film, telling Collider “It was finding these guys, they’re even more pathetic because it’s 15 years or 20 years later. Tim Allen’s character lets it go that he really went to outer space and have been mocked ever since, they lost their TV show and they’re even more of a disaster. It was a great opening because they were asked to go to Comic Con and they think it’s because they’re going to reinvigorate the series but instead they’re going to hand it off to a younger group of actors. Star Trek Fleet Command: Oh Yeah, TV, That’s A Thing Isn’t It Launched almost two years ago, Star Trek Fleet Command lets players continue the continuity established by the Abrams Trek films–or the “Kelvin Timeline,” if you’re feeling formal. Since then, twenty-one updates have built out a detailed world for an otherwise narrowly-defined narrative. But in the near future, players might look through the lens flare and ask “new content, who Dis?”...Discovery, that is.On August 24th, game developer Scopely announced outcomes from a recent discussion with ViacomCBS about Fleet Command’s success as a game. “The important news was that Star Trek Fleet Command will soon welcome all of Star Trek’s past, present, and future. That includes the film and TV series from the Star Trek Original Series, Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise....Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and more to come.” Fleet Command intends to release content arcs focused on one TV series at a time, though a narrative path through the end of this year has yet to be determined. Interactions between story arc elements will depend on the choices that players make when assembling their crews.

In general, what Kurtzman likes about Short Treks is the series ability to explore things that would otherwise go unseen in the Star Trek multiverse - sometimes using different mediums. With regards to the animated “The Girl Who Made The Stars”, Kurtzman wanted to take the opportunity to emulate another animation house - Pixar. Talking about “Q&A”, Kurtzman pointed out his love of “Waiting for Godot” and Hitchcock’s “Rope” and “Lifeboat”, citing the limited sets and how that challenge has the opportunity to ramp up the drama. He then told an interesting story about Picard Season 1 showrunner Michael Chabon, the writer of “Q&A” Finally, Kurtzman talked about the challenges of making Short Treks, as well as what’s to come in future seasons. During Kurtzman’s sit-down with Dominic Patton on Deadlines “Contenders Television: The Nominees”, the conversation shifted from the Short Trek “Q&A” to the highly-anticipated “Strange New Worlds”. For those that don’t remember, “Strange New Worlds” is the recently announced live-action series that will focus on Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck’s Mr. Spock, and Rebecca Romijn’s Number One aboard the Enterprise, pre-Kirk. The bad news is that Kurtzman didn’t talk long about the upcoming series - but if we’ve learned anything from the previous segment, content doesn’t necessarily have to be long to be good! Even if you haven’t seen an episode of the original series, you probably know who Spock is or that Scotty will beam you up. In England, the same is likely true, but there is a franchise even older - even more popular than Trek - WHO knows what it is? Doctor Who, of course. The series which first aired in 1963, three years before Star Trek, follows the adventures of a rogue time lord - known as the Doctor - and his companions. They travel through space and time using the TARDIS, a blue police box that was common in England in the mid-60’s. So why are we talking about Doctor Who on our Star Trek podcast? Because the tenth Doctor, and one of the most popular, wants a go at Trek. In a Reddit AMA thread, David Tennant - who played the tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010 - was asked which franchise he would most like to “Cross off his acting bucket list, Tennant responded ”Star Trek would be great. After talking to George Takei for the podcast I’ve got a bit immersed in it.”. According to SyFy.com, the podcast Tennant was referring to was “David Tennant Does A Podcast With....”.   There were several suggestions on who the former Who should play, but Trelane and Q both received quite a bit of Buzz. The second part of The Capitoline Wolf story, this event features the new 5-star "Brigitte" Torres, 5-star Alicia Travers, returning 4-star Incognito Kirk, and recurring 5-star Humanoid Figure event crew. Equally new is the 5-star Aenar Jhamel faction reward, which will feature in the following week’s “Whistles and Canaries” Galaxy Event. Star Trek Adventures: It’s Good to Be Bad There are no villains who don’t have their reasons, said Mr. Welles–and now, there are eight fewer villains who don’t have stats either. The latest release for Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures, “Iconic Villains,” turns eight of Trek’s most celebrated baddies into fully playable non-player characters. The 15-page PDF-only document sells for US$5.22 for your tabletop gaming needs, and the accompanying miniatures set will set you back US$52.34 once Modiphius has more of them to sell. However one of the featured foes is none other than Q himself, which makes us wonder: what does God need with a stat block? Check-Out Time for Trexels II If you’ve been interested in developer YesGnome's Trexels II mobile game, but never got around to playing it, you have until the end of this month to get it in gear. On August 14th, YesGnome announced on Facebook that “the time has come...to part ways.” Trexels II will no longer be available on the Google Play or Apple App Stores as of September 1st, but it is not going away entirely. The game servers will still be maintained after that date “until further notice.”

TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star Trek Movie Plans are Undecided Werner Herzog once said “I WOULD TRAVEL DOWN TO HELL AND WRESTLE A FILM AWAY FROM THE DEVIL IF IT WAS NECESSARY.”. We Star Trek fans may need to get in touch with Mr. Herzog - because the Star Trek film franchise is in a bit of limbo. On Friday August 7th, Deadline broke the story that Paramount’s newest film Captain - Emma Watts - was putting the Noah Hawley led Trek film on ice. According to the piece, Watts, who formerly ran many Franchises for Fox, was in the process of evaluating which Trek was most feasible for the studio moving forward. Hawley’s film was put on the back-burner in large part due to its plot. ”What we’re hearing is that [...] the Hawley pic  [...] calls for a new cast and might be about a deadly virus which might feel awkward given current circumstance”. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources confirm the rumor about the plot, adding “the virus wipes out vast parts of the known universe”. So what’s next? Is it all bad news? Not necessarily. According to Deadline, Hawley’s film moving back may mean another oft discussed Trek film could move forward. There are two options, and we’ve discussed them both ad-nauseum. The first is Star Trek by Quentin Tarantino, which we’ll get into in a minute. The other, and according to Deadline the most likely of the three films to get made, is the formerly-SJ Clarkson-helmed Star Trek Kelvin IV. The script brings back the Kelvin Enterprise and her crew, as well as Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk. It was dumped in favor of Hawley’s pitch due to the high price tag that went along with bringing back the Kelvin-crew, but according to Deadline it ”might have the cleanest path toward a relaunch, with an emphasis on boosting overseas gross numbers which have never been the franchise’s strong suit. These decisions will take place over the next few weeks.” So stay tuned for the next chapter of this ongoing saga! We Learn More About Star Trekantino Quentin Tarantino once said “THE GOOD IDEAS WILL SURVIVE.”. Let’s hope that’s true, because it feels like THIS idea has been around for a long time. THIS idea, of course, is the Tarantino helmed Star Trek film - Star Trekantino. This weeks Deadline piece shed some light on the on-again-off-again film, including it’s feasibility and - more interestingly - its plot. ”Tarantino dropped out as director, but the project is still viable based on an episode of the classic Star Trek series that takes place largely earthbound in a 30s gangster setting — might serve the franchise best as Logan-like spinoffs when the core franchise has been revitalized.”. So, tarantino wanted a “Piece of the Action”? Tarantino, as stated, dropped out as director, but still expressed excitement for the Michael L. Smith penned script. Tarantino told Deadline in January of this year ”I think they might make that movie, but I just don’t think I’m going to direct it. It’s a good idea. They should definitely do it and I’ll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2eRJozOZa0 Star Trek Prodigy Gets a Director/Co-Executive Producer Heading back to the small screen, Star Trek’s upcoming Nickelodeon offering - Star Trek: Prodigy - has a new creative lead - Ben Hibon. Hibon has been creating CG animation for video games, shorts, and movies since 2005; having most notably directed the animated “Tale of Three Brothers'' in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Along with his Creative lead role, Hibon will direct and serve as a co-executive producer on the Hageman Brothers series. Ramsey Naito of Nickelodeon group said of the addition ”Ben’s contributions to the world of animation are immeasurable, and we are so lucky to have his vision and creative genius on Star Trek: Prodigy. The event begins on August 13th with the “Cultural Property” Skirmish Event, with more details to follow. And look, we’re not saying it was aliens–Disruptor Beam is saying it was aliens. Games and Online Harassment Hotline Launch Captains, this next Gaming News story isn’t about any new game or new event in one of our favorite games. Instead, we want to share a different story that came to our attention this week. It’s a story that we hope will be helpful to some of you, maybe even important.  As reported recently by Ars Technica, and shared with us by Sue fromWomen At Warp, a new type of text-based hotline has launched for gamers. It’s called the Games and Online Harassment Hotline, and their mission is to offer free emotional support and help resources to gamers and game developers struggling with the unique issues common to the industry. Initially conceived by Feminist Frequency’s Anita Sarkeesian, the hotline is solely purposed to offering a listening ear and support to anyone in gaming who might need it. As Sarkeesian puts it,  It's for people who make and play games. Streamer, competitor, press, fan, my mom who plays Candy Crush. There's no gatekeeping here, no test to get into our boundaries. If you're part of our space, we're here for you… Burnt out by crunch. Isolated, lonely, or depressed. Facing online harassment. Abuse. Afraid that you have caused harm and want a place to talk that out. Worried for your friends or colleagues. Or - - that which we call a recently-re-merged-corporation’s over-the-top subscription service by any other name would deliver as enjoyable an entertainment experience at a comparable price point?  Okay, so the idiom may not entirely work here… and the iambic pentameter was thrown to wind - but it does Segway very - VERY - poorly into our first story! On Wednesday July 29th ViacomCBS revealed more about their upcoming CBS All Access revamp, and in the process added 70 shows to All Access’ expanding catalogue. President/CEO of ViacomCBS Digital and ViacomCBS’s chief digital officer Marc DeBevoise said of the move ”It’s the first big step to transform All Access into the super-service we’ve been talking about”.  Included in the addition are titles from BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, The Smithsonian Channel, VH1, and TV Land - and Paramount Pictures threw in a few movies for good measure. Along with the title roll-out,  the CBS All Access’ user interface got an upgrade, and we learned a little more about ViacomCBS’ strategy for the service. On exclusivity and distribution, DeBevoise told ViacomCBS Newsroom  “A lot of our competitors are being carried on one platform and not on another. We’re effectively across all the major platforms already. We are everywhere. We have millions of subscribers. We have a service with high engagement”. Translation, they’re more than happy to let you watch Star Trek elsewhere - as long as they’re getting paid. So now the important stuff - what’s this going to cost us? As of right now DeBevoise doesn’t expect an increase with the rebranding roll out, due to hit sometime in 2021! Vague, but good news nonetheless. Lower Decks “Legacy Actors” and Hope for International Viewers Part of the problem with pre-recording a podcast is that - inevitably - important talking points today may turn out to be old news tomorrow. That COULD be the case with our next story - you’ll see what we mean in a minute. On Monday August 3rd, entertainment website Inverse published a sit down with “Star Trek: Lower Decks”  show-runner Mike McMahon and star Tawny Newsome to discuss the upcoming series - set to debut on August 6th. The series, which takes place one year after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis”, would presumably have reference to the Star Trek of that era. When McMahon and Newsome were asked about a possible Newsome/Mariner crossover to “Star Trek: Picard”, McMahon dropped a fully trekked nugget straight into the sauce. ”That’s interesting because we do have legacy actors who show up in the first season of Lower Decks and we have gotten to have a little bit of where are they now sort of vibe through a Lower Decks lens. But I gotta say, if anyone wants Mariner to show up on their live-action Star Treks, you’ve got to have Tawny” So now the time paradox - this news on Friday August 7th may NOT be as great as it was on Tuesday August 4th because on Thursday August 6th one of those Legacy Actors may have already shown up. Or maybe not - Especially if you don’t live in North America. At the time of this writing, there still hasn’t been word on how international viewers will get to watch Trek’s first comedy series. Kirk get underway, the personal effects gathered to help pay tribute begin to change or disappear! Can you determine what kind of temporal disturbance is causing this before Kirk himself vanishes?” Get ready to party like it’s 2019, 2268 and 2404 at the same time, captains. From August 6th to 10th, Star Trek Timelines is reprising its “Legend Unwritten” Galaxy Event from March of last year for the Federation and Augment factions. This time around, the ranked reward will be the new 5-star EV Suit T’Pol;  last week’s ranked reward crew Technician Fisher joins 5-star Captain Harry Kim, 4-star 1701 Jadzia, and 4-star Evil Kirk as the event crew. At least, we’re pretty sure it’s Evil Kirk. None of them are wearing name tags. The official Star Trek Timelines Twitter account also announced the upcoming Enterprise Vacation Campaign, starting August 6th. Although details on the event remain scant, we do know it will feature Enterprise’s Lieutenant Reed and Commander Tucker as we saw in the episode “Two Days and Two Nights”. Probably not all of how much we saw them, though. Consider Yourself Humbled (Bundled) Star Trek may take place in an idealized future, but its gaming franchises continue to recognize the needs of the many today. Until August 19th, Humble Bundle and Modiphius Entertainment are offering a Star Trek Adventures RPG Book Bundle in support of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Purchasing the bundle at the top $15 tier unlocks the Federation core rulebook, expansions, pregenerated adventures, canon character sheets, and even a 50% discount off the core rulebook print edition. The US and Iran almost started World War III, there’s a global pandemic, giant murderous hornets - aptly named Murder Hornets - were big news until they weren’t. Civil unrest, an economic rollercoaster, an oily island that drives men mad, social distancing. Wild stuff. So in this weird-and-wild world of social-distancing and goatees-for-all, what of convention season? You may be surprised to learn conventions have, in fact, continued - Sort of.  While some promoters have postponed their events until smack-dab-in-the-middle of the predicted second-wave of Covid-19 *Cough*Creation*Cough* Others have decided to take their stage digital - including arguably the biggest Geek-Con in all the world - San Diego Comic Con. This week, the mega-event streamed its much anticipated panels via the internet, teasing fans everywhere with what is to come in their favorite fictional universe - and ParamountCBS’ Star Trek set the pace. On Thursday July 23rd, the showrunners and stars of Star Trek’s newest offerings pulled up their favorite chair and shared thoughts about what has happened - and what is to come - in their respective Star Trek offerings. We are going to cover SDCC20 a little different than we have in previous years because - well - it was a little different. Star Trek: Discovery It seems only apt that we cover Star Trek’s first “NuTrek” offering - Star Trek: Discovery - at the start. Before the Q&A, Discovery’s showrunner Michelle Paradise led Executive Producer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi  and the cast of Discovery season two -including most of the bridge crew as well as Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn - in a table read of the Discovery Season 2 Finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2”. The read was edited, so it played very tightly, and was interspersed with early special effects layouts and storyboards of some of the action sequences. It was a fun introduction, to be sure, and it was great to see the acting chops of the cast sans costumes, sets, and makeup. But what about Trek nuggets? Oh - there were trek nuggets. While the Q&A was interesting - revealing a POSSIBLE return of more Kelpians, and verification of a stronger romance between Stametts and Culber - possibly the biggest Discovery Season 3 news dropped a few days after the panel. On July 27th, the team released a short video of Burnham holding a tattered Federation flag, which ended with a panel that read “Star Trek: Discovery. New Season October 15”. Frankly, very little was said about the upcoming season, and it was - in large part - a rehash of things we’ve already covered. The cast was in awe of Sir Patrick, it was nice for the Next Generation alumni to reunite, both Sir Patrick and Brent Spiner were reluctant to return to the roles...et cetera, et cetera.  As always though, it’s fun to watch the banter and admiration of the cast, and Sir Patrick even earned a couple of new nicknames - SPS and P-Stew. Despite the lack of new information coming from the virtual panel, there was some fun news that came a few days BEFORE the convention - Star Trek: Picard is getting a physical medium release!  Announced on July 21st, Picard’s premiere season will be available on DVD, BluRay, and Limited Edition Steelbook on October 6. Included in the release will be the first ten episodes of the season, documentaries, commentary, deleted scenes, and the Short Trek “Children of Mars”. At the time of this writing, the DVD can be preordered for 37.34 US dollars and the BluRay for 47.99 US dollars at Amazon.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azicjg_WlPM Star Trek: Strange New Worlds As we mentioned in our first story, the upcoming “Strange New Worlds” leads joined the Discovery cast for a table read and Q&A. As expected, they discussed how Discovery’s second season adventure would affect their characters in the upcoming series - but we’ll get back to that.  Leading into the table read, Star Trek’s Meta Captains - Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin - delivered a bit of excitement. In introducing Strange New Worlds, Kurtzman revealed that the team was working on the series as far back as last SDCC. Kurtzman then gave some progress on where “Strange New Worlds” was, production wise. Meanwhile, back at the panel the trio of Mount, Peck, and Romijn discussed Discovery’s effect on their upcoming roles. Star Trek: Animated Finally, the panel covered Star Trek animation! The Star Trek: Lower Decks panel was moderated by series creator and showrunner Mike McMahon, and started with a clip. It begins, much like the teaser, with Boimler’s “Captains log” being interrupted by the loud and spunky Ensign Mariner - who turns out to be celebrating shore leave with a bit of libation. The comedy is cartoony, but with a Star Trek backdrop! After the clip, we are introduced to the voice talent, each describing their characters, what they love about the show, and a BLEEP ridden segment that tones out the spoilers they’re spilling. You can Trek out 16 new images of the series at Treknews.net! But we said the panel covered Star Trek ANIMATION, not Star Trek LOWER DECKS. So what does that mean? Well, we finally know a bit about the upcoming Nickelodeon series! After Kurtzman discussed Strange New Worlds, Kadin talked a bit about the new animated project “Prodigy”. In an announcement on Star Trek.com ”Nickelodeon and CBS Television Studios today officially revealed the title and logo for its all-new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, which follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”. The show is vaguely expected in 2021. Star Trek Supports NAACP Legal Defense Fund The leadership, cast, and crew of Star Trek spent a good deal of time talking about Star Trek’s importance, and what makes it relevant today - Inclusion, Respect, Equality. Section 31, the Borg, and the Klingon Empire are punting all ideas of ethical scientific research out the airlock in Star Trek Timelines’ impending “No Trouble At All” Faction Event. Kicking off on July 30th and running through August 3rd, the event will feature the new 5-star Technician Fisher from the original NCC-1701 as its ranked reward. Event Crew includes last week’s 5-star faction reward Dr. Edward La Forge, the new 5-star Mother Horta, and the scourge of the Cabot himself: the 4-star Edward “Idiot” Larkin. You might become best friends with a neural parasite, a smear on the side of a Borg cube, or patriarch of the Arakawa yakuza clan. Probably not all at once, though. On July 22nd, the Reno Gazette Journal published an interview with the 83-year-old actor, activist and Star Trek icon George Takei about his voice acting role as criminal patriarch Masumi Arakawa in the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon video game. Takei explains that his motivation for the role comes from his fascination with modern yakuza culture and its samurai roots, saying “Here is this man who, at his core, is a decent human being who lives within that culture and expects that same kind of fidelity. Some aspects demand inhumane fidelity to that code and it's a shared understanding”. Takei also talks about his early life as a Japanese-American in the midst of World War II, and how his admiration for the benshi narrators of silent film lead to his careers in voice acting, theater, and far beyond the stars. Are you feeling let down by the inferior minds of Spock, Data, Reginald Barclay, and their intellect limiting Three-dimensional chess? Bored with the Aldabren Exchange and the Kriskov Gambit? Well, then maybe the new 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel would be more challenging! The new game, released on Steam by developer Thunkspace, might not be a part of Star Trek, but somehow we think Trek’s great minds would approve. The rules for this brain-breaking chess variation begin from the standard chess rules and standard chess board. Then you introduce the ability to time travel your pieces, creating a multiverse timeline of alternate boards, and things get crazy. We’re talking enough temporal mechanics here to drive Miles O’Brien to distraction. They even introduce a couple of new pieces entirely dedicated to time-travel movement, the Unicorn and the Dragon.  Read some of the Steam reviews of the game, and it feels like Q himself might find this game worthy. For example, one top review reads “I was playing a game against a human opponent online, and at one point they sent a queen back in time from one of the ten timelines currently in play to put five of my past kings into check at once. Sitting down virtually with Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, James McAvoy responded to the question of whether or not he would consider playing a young Picard and later painted a picture with his words regarding his scent - and Sir Patrick Stewart’s face. Star Trek’s first animated series in 46 years is set to debut on August 6th, and the folks at CBS want the world to know about it. Last week, we got our first look at the trailer for the series - which we talked about in episode 469 of Priority One - and this week, we get four new screenshots - and a new recurring character announcement! On July 15th, three of the four new photos were released through fan sites like Trekmovie and Trekcore, and feature our scrappy heroes at work and at play. The fourth screenshot came on July 20th, with the exclusive Deadline announcement that “Black Monday’s” Paul Scheer would play Lt. Commander Andy Billups, the chief engineer on the USS Cerritos. In the still, we see the chief engineer, a smiling middle-aged man with a mustache, poking away at an engineering console while speaking to Ensign Rutherford. In regards to Scheer, the actor-comedian isn’t new to voiceover work, having done voices for Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” and Netflix’s decidedly-adult “Big Mouth”, as well as Fox’s Seth McFarlane helmed “American Dad” among others. Star Trek: Discovery at Virtual Trek Con The cancellation or postponement of conventions in 2020 due to Covid-19 is a thing, but it has started a bit of a movement - the Virtual Con. This week starting on July 15, Deep Space Nine Star and 7th Rule Podcast host Cirroc Lofton spearheaded the free Virtual Trek Con - a five day “convention” that hosted stars and crew from across the Star Trek multiverse. On Sunday July 19th, Moderator Ryan Husk sat down with stars of “Star Trek: Discovery”, and though no big spoilers were dished, we did get a few interesting nuggets for the dipping. Husk was joined by Doug Jones, as well as Linus’ David Benjamin Tomlinson, Siranna’s Hannah Spear, and Dr. Pollard’s Raven Dauda. In an exchange with David Tomlinson - who has played Klingons and Kelpians among others - Doug Jones revealed that everyone’s favorite Saurian will be back for season 3. In speaking about Linus’s eating habits, Tomlinson and Jones tease a little about Linus’s screen time. Hannah Spear, who plays Saru’s sister Siranna, MAY HAVE hinted that Siranna could return in another iteration of Star Trek - think Strange New Worlds or Section 31.  The panel is just under an hour, and really highlights the love all of the people involved with Discovery share for one another. You’ll also get some insight into how Siranna’s character was created, Tomlinson’s love of prosthetics, and how Raven Dauda would love to be the Chief Medical Officer of Discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kLwF1sHyKQ Trek Stars Outside of Trek It’s been a while since we’ve had some new Star Trek. We’re not complaining - really - but the final episode of Picard aired back in March and since then - nothing. Well this week saw a bunch of news cross our feed about Star Trek stars in other upcoming roles or mediums, so we figured we’d share them with you now so that you have them for, you know, the next five month drought. A new documentary featuring Nichelle Nichols’ role in NASA’s recruiting program - which focus on women and people of color - has struck a distribution deal with Shout! Studios. The film, titled “Woman in Motion”, will feature interviews with friends, colleagues, experts, and Star Trek stars. It’s expected to release in 2021. If you’re itching for something this moment, and are in the mood for a bit of a downer, HBO’s documentary Showbiz Kids is out now - with stories from Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton. According to HBO’s website description ”Showbiz Kids offers an unvarnished look at the high-risk, high-reward business of working as a child actor in the entertainment industry. Written and directed by former child actor Alex Winter (Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, The Panama Papers), the film chronicles the shared experiences of prominent former child stars and the personal and professional price of fame and failure on a child.” Looking for something a little lighter and don’t mind waiting about a week? The long-awaited “Unbelievable!!!!!” is set for it’s streaming release on August 1st. The Sci-Fi comedy sports a “Team America” style marionette, Snoop Dogg - and over FORTY Star Trek alumni! To go along with the release,  there will be events all day - we’ll post a link in the show notes if you want to trek them out. And finally, a little casting news, Star Trek’s Kelvin Spock - Zachary Quinto - has been cast in the Amazon Prime animated series “Invincible”. Based on the graphical novel of the same name, the story follows the son of Earth’s greatest Superhero. As the young man begins to manifest powers, he starts his own adventures, to varying degrees of success. Quinto will play a superhero named Robot, an ally to the protagonist Mark Grayson. “Invincible” is from the same author that wrote “The Walking Dead” graphic novels, and the series is set for release at the end of 2020. Dr. Edward La Forge joins the Timelines lineup as this event’s 5-star Ranked Reward crew, with high event bonuses coming from the new 5-star Mother L’Rell, new 4-star Groom Worf, and returning 4-star Q Junior as event crew. And what is a Skirmish Event without the armies of heaven to command: with the 2-star Klingon K’Vort Bird-of-Prey, 4-star U.S.S. Defiant, and the new 5-star IKS Negh’Var, the brazen throat of war shall never cease to roar. QAPLA’! The Continuing Mission, With Terms & Conditions By now Star Trek Timelines players have no doubt been confronted with Some Kind of In-Game Pop-up Anomaly, asking them to accept publisher Tilting Point’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. On July 17 Wicked Realms announced the switch from former owner Disruptor Beam’s terms, noting that players would have to accept the terms to continue playing. The post acknowledges recent concerns with the game’s Offer Wall feature, and a review of what advertising partner ironSource’s SDK collects when the game is launched on Android (remember, the Offer Wall is indefinitely gone from iOS). However, any offers you-the-player accept via the Offer Wall “will take place outside of the game and outside the control of Tilting Point or ironSource, and you may be requested to share additional information on a voluntary basis to the third party managing that offer, and such information will be subject to that third party’s privacy policy”. Sir Patrick Stewart Turns 80 As far as Birthday’s go, 80 is an incredible milestone -- And when you’re Sir Patrick Stewart, everyone wants to recognize your achievements! On June 13th, Sir Patrick celebrated his 80th Birthday and friends, fans, and news outlets did their very best to honor the veteran actor. The Guardian, for instance, interviewed several of SirtPatStew’s friends and colleagues to share some of their most memorable moments with the actor. For instance, David Tennant had this to say, "He’s fit as a fiddle and so strapping! How many 80-year-olds are the lead in their own science fiction series? There’s nothing of the 'old man' about him. He’s very virile – I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me saying that!" Sir Ian McKellen told The Guardian, "Eighty is, of course, a milestone but he has had so many remarkable achievements in his careering journey from Huddersfield, to Stratford, the West End, Hollywood, to Broadway and beyond, I’m sure there will be no silly talk about retirement." And - of course - many of his co-stars from TNG joined him for a celebration and shared a picture of them together. Fortunately, they were all wearing their masks and maintaining social distancing! According to Kaye, during an interview about the film, Sallin hinted that he’s currently in the process of developing a script for a new Star Trek Film. I don’t have it completely written, but I have a lot of it written. I have a concept for another Star Trek feature that I’ve had discussions with Paramount about — at least on the phone. This one I guarantee you is unlike anything that has been done in Star Trek, and it will be part of the canon, but they (the studio) don’t want to talk about it until they see what Noah Hawley does. -Robert Sallin via Den of Geek Comic-Con@Home w/ Star Trek The pandemic may have put a damper on most of our plans this year --- including the cancellation or rescheduling or re-imagining of convention events. San Diego Comic Con for instance, has shifted their presentations to an online format and Star Trek will be participating in several ways. Generally, the event takes place Wednesday July 22 - Sunday, July 26. However, you don’t have to stay glued to your computer all three days for the Star Trek Studded events. Thursday, July 23 @ 10AM PT, The Star Trek Universe Virtual Panel will feature discussions with Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman & Heather Kadin -- Followed by a virtual table read of Star Trek Discovery’s episode “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2” with many of the episode’s featured actors. Later, Mike McMahan takes the virtual stage to discuss the new animated comedy series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” McMahan will be joined by several of the voice actors from the series including Tawny Newsom, Jack Quaid and more. It all wraps with a “Star Trek: Picard” panel that includes Sir Patrick Steward himself along with fan favorites like Jonathan Frakes, Jonathan Del Arco, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan -- among many of the other key actors from the series. During an Instagram Livestream, Mary Chieffo expressed enthusiasm over the prospect of returning as L’Rell in the new Pike Series: “Strange New Worlds” ---- It would be nice to see a discussion about what the world will look like in this series set in the same universe as Star Trek Discovery. The 2-minute and 15 second video takes us on a wild ride aboard the USS Cerritos and provides a sneak peak of the show’s overall tone. Imahara - who is best known for his role on Mythbusters and - later, portrayed Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek: Continues. He was only 49 years old. Silence Continues We’re still holding our coverage of updates from Star Trek Online but, thought it prudent to share with you a list of other game developers who have stepped up to support social justice, equality, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Blizzard has donated to several organizations Bungie has designed items to sell with all the proceeds going towards Equal Justice Initiative Niantic (Pokemon Go) is donating $5Mil to "Black gaming and AR creators that can live on the Niantic platform" and "US nonprofit organizations that are helping local communities rebuild." EA is donating $1Million to the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and other organizations  Ubisoft is making a $100,000 donation to the NAACP This is but a short list of game developers and companies who have taken measurable actions to support Social Justice and Equality. Gamespot has a very extensive list --- links will be in the shownotes.  Star Trek Timelines Event: “Lightbringers”  by Thomas Reynolds After last week’s Flashback to Dozaria, Star Trek Timelines returns to the future...present...whatever, with “Lightbringers”. The Galaxy-type Event runs from this Thursday, July 16th, to Monday July 20th for the Romulan Star Empire, Federation, and Ferengi Traditionalist factions, with 5-star Mother L’Rell as the Ranked Reward crewmember. Event crew granting high bonuses for “Lightbringers” include last week’s Ranked Reward 5-star Kamin, the new 4-star Traveler Wesley, and the returning 4-star Commander Tomalak. Other Picard and Wesley variants will grant small bonuses. On July 10th Star Trek Timelines developer Wicked Realms announced it was removing its controversial Offer Wall feature from the iOS app indefinitely. Ostensibly this is because “due to Apple guidelines the offers that can be presented on iOS are too limited to be of interest.” Third-party developers taking issue with Apple’s App Store constraints is certainly nothing new, and it’s significant that the Wall’s alive and well on the game’s Android version. However, recent player base outcry (and fan resource website outages) protesting perceived privacy threats almost certainly influenced the decision. Wicked Realms acknowledged “ongoing concerns regarding the Offer Wall in general” and their advertising partner ironSource’s business practices in particular. The Last Outpost Provides Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force Holomatch For Download by Shane Hoover https://twitter.com/Last_Outpost/status/1281447523933093889 Star Trek Voyager premiered twenty five years ago, in 1995. Five years after that, the series debuted its first video game, “Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force”. And now, 20 years later, a community of Trek gamers called The Last Outpost has rereleased the multiplayer platform of “Elite Force” for free download. Called “Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force Holomatch”, the game is available for Windows and Linux PC’s. In a tweet posted July 9th, The Last Outpost announced, /QUOTE/  2020 is a milestone year. The Last Outpost is 10 years old today, Raven Software celebrated 30 years, and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force turns 20 this September.  This week on Episode 468 of Priority One --- We Trek Out how Star Trek has been keeping us entertained during lockdown with videos galore! In Star Trek gaming, lots going on in the mobile world this month with both Star Trek Fleet Command and Star Trek Timelines. Plus, a new expansion to the tabletop RPG - Star Trek Adventures. Sid City Stories If you’re sitting at your computer or lounging on the sofa surfing the web on your phone, you might be interested in a story-time adventure set in the Star Trek DS9 universe. You see, at the start of the pandemic and subsequent lock downs, Alexander Siddig --- known to trekkies for his role as Dr. Julian Bashir --- took to live-streaming! His Sid City Social Club has been a huge success with trekkies and with guests like Nana Visitor and -- most recently - Andrew Robinson - there’s something for all trekkies to enjoy. On July 6th, Sid City Social Club posted a video of Siddig and Robinson reading a story titled, “Alone Together: A DS9 Companion: Episode 1 ‘These Days’" written by Matthew Campbell. This first episode tells the story of Dr. Julian Bashir making an emergency trip to Cardassia. There Elim Garak -- now the leader of Cardassia Prime explains to the doctor that Cardassia has fallen victim to a pandemic that threatens the entire planet. This first episode is just under 33 minutes --- so, if you loved Garak and Julian’s relationship, be sure to #TrekThisOut. On July 2nd, CBS All Access released a special “Away Mission” version of The Ready Room - hosted by Wil Wheaton. In this installment, we get a detailed look at Rios’s ship, “La Sirena” from Production Designer Todd Cherniavsky. From drawings, to models, to walk throughs on the set - this will definitely satisfy our listeners who love to learn about the ships in Star Trek. Following the guided tour, Wheaton welcomes Sir Patrick Stewart via Zoom to discuss Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard. During their time, they spoke about some of Stewart’s proudest moments, including getting scolded by Marina Sirtis on Napenthe and his final scenes with Data. The highly anticipated animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks is scheduled to premiere Thursday, August 6th with its first episode. The following 9 episodes will be released weekly on Thursdays via CBS All Access in the US. For those who may be unfamiliar, Star Trek: Lower Decks is the animated series developed by Emmy Award winner and former writer for the critically acclaimed series, “Rick and Morty.” Trekkies are likely to remember McMahan as the creative force behind the @TNG_S8 Twitter Account that told stories of the “unreleased” season 8 of TNG. Star Trek Timelines Star Trek Timelines’ “Ripples & Waves” Mega-Event has concluded, and players must now confront Some Kind of Anomaly in our own timeline: a Flashback event. A reprise of last November’s “Secrets in the Desert” event will run from July 9th through 13th for the Federation, Cardassian Union, and Section 31 Factions. However the timelines have already diverged, because now the ranked reward is the 5-star Kataan native Kamin–AKA Captain Picard’s flute-playing alter ego from the TNG episode “The Inner Light.” Event crew for high bonuses includes last week’s 5-star Desert Archer, 4-star Torchbearer Tyler, and 4-star Undercover O’Brien; any of these characters’ other variants will grant small bonuses. Player Protests and Blackouts for Star Trek Timelines’ Offer Wall Star Trek Timelines is also in the news this week for less pleasant reasons. Players criticized both the game’s recently-introduced “Offer Wall” feature, which grants players free in-game currency in return for participating in marketing surveys, and the ad agency that administers it as unacceptable risks to their personal privacy. A number of popular, fan-maintained informational websites have gone dark to protest the Offer Wall, and do so as long as it is in the game. Star Trek Fleet Command: Patch D20 Announcement Commanders, it’s time to cast the die and hope luck is on your side: today Star Trek Fleet Command revealed the new content coming with Patch D20. Part 2 of the Outlaws Arc, “The Exchange,” continues the story in the newly-revamped Augment Space. Commanders will find themselves in cahoots with Khan and Harry Mudd’s fragile alliance, with some of the most lucrative–and lethal–assets in the Alpha Quadrant for the taking. Assemble a team. Boldly go. Do crimes. Patch D20 also rolls in systems content with a new Outlaws Research Tree, the Rogue Faction and its very own Faction Store, and 20 new Outlaw missions accessible through the Fleet Command Battle Pass. But with new content comes Eclipse and Outlaw Armada hostiles–show them you’re not to be trifled with in Harry Mudd’s new getaway cruiser, the Stella. Because no two jobs are ever the same, Stella features a special scrapping mechanic. Tier it up, tear it down and rebuild your ride to reap even more bonuses from your ill-gotten gains and unlock special nodes in the Outlaws Research Tree. Star Trek Adventures: The Klingon Empire Tabletop players have enjoyed seeking out new life and new civilizations in many Star Trek role-playing game systems, most recently in Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures 2d20-based system. However great dishonor has been done to the Klingon Empire, which has not seen new playable content in almost 40 years. That, brave warriors, is about to change.
