10th Sunday after Pentecost Eucharist for Extraordinary Times Christ the Servant Lutheran Church August 9, 2020 WELCOME CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen. Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin. Reconciling God, we confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny your presence in our lives. We place our hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought, word, and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen. Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN: Lord Listen to Your Children Praying ELW 752 (x2) Lord, listen to your children praying. Lord, send your Spirit in this place. Lord, listen to your children praying. Send us love, send us power, send us grace. PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you, And also with you. Let us pray: Life giving God; Jesus met the Samaritan woman where she was at, and gave her the promise of salvation. Continue to meet us where we are and assure us of your never-ending love. In Jesus name. Amen SCRIPTURE Psalm 86:1-5 Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God; be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all day long. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you. Word of God, Word of Life GOSPEL John 4:1-15 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, 'Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John'- although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized- he left Judea and started back to Galilee. But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink'. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, 'How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?' (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink", you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.' The woman said to him, 'Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?' Jesus said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.' The woman said to him, 'Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.' Word of God, Word of Life MESSAGE HYMN: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say ELW 611 1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast." 2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live. 3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. For your whole church throughout the world. Give courage in the midst of the ongoing pandemic, political unrest, and other storms, so that we see and hear Jesus meeting us at the well and saying: "those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty." Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For the well-being of your creation. Protect waterways, forests, lands, and wildlife from exploitation and abuse. Help the human family endeavor to sustain and be sustained by the resources of your hand. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For the nations and their leaders. In you, steadfast love and faithfulness meet, and righteousness and peace kiss. May nations in conflict know the peace that is the fruit of justice, and the justice that is the path to peace. May all nations value the sanctity of life, and pursue the wellbeing of all their peoples. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For those in need. Everyone who calls upon your name will be saved. Accompany all who are lonely, hear the voices of those who cry out in anguish, and support those who are frustrated in their search for an affordable place to live. We pray for those suffering this day (especially). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For our congregation. You meet us where we are as your people and we thank you for this gift of life sustaining resources. We pray for those who are new to this community, for students and teachers preparing for a new school year, and for those struggling with unexpected hardship. Supply us generously with your grace for our life together. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We give you thanks, O God, for the saints of the whole church from all times and places, and for the saints in our lives and in our community whom you have gathered to yourself especially all who have died with COVID-19, and those who have died alone. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. In the certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love, we offer these prayers to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. EUCHARIST FOR EXTRAORDINARY TIMES The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks and praise to God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Holy God, throughout all generations you come, and are present with us at our tables, turning ordinary meals into holy moments for us to experience your grace in tangible ways. When thousands who followed Jesus were hungry in a deserted place, he took a few loaves and fishes to feed the multitudes. After walking the road to Emmaus, the risen Christ dined with his disciples around the table in the home of Cleopas and his wife, breaking bread and making his presence known. On the shores of the Sea of Tiberias, once again the risen Christ broke bread with his disciples, turning an ordinary breakfast into a resurrection feast. In an upper room of a guest house, in the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me. Together as the body of Christ, trusting that the distance that separates us is bridged by the Holy Spirit who makes us one, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ is risen! The tomb is empty! Over and over again, you have shown nothing is impossible with you. So, come, make your presence known to us now, as we share in this meal of Holy Communion. Send your Holy Spirit to bridge this table and the tables in our homes, this bread, and all the bread you have made ready, this wine and all the wine out poured. Prepare our hearts to receive you in the bread and wine, Christ's body and blood that we share. Amen THE LORD'S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Receive these gifts of the living God. You are now invited to share the sacrament with one another, and with yourself using these or similar words: The body of Christ, broken for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. HYMN: For All the Faithful Women ELW 419 v 1, 8, Last 1. For all the faithful women who served in days of old, to you shall thanks be given; to all, their stories told. They served with strength and gladness in tasks your wisdom gave. To you their lives bore witness, proclaimed your pow'r to save. 8. Recall the outcast woman with whom our Lord conversed: Christ gave her living water to quench her deepest thirst. Like hers, our hearts are yearning, Christ offers us his word. Then may our lips be burning to witness to our Lord. Last. All praise to God the Father! All praise to Christ the Son! All praise to God the Spirit, who binds the church as one! With saints who went before us, with saints who witness still, we sing glad alleluias and strive to do your will. BLESSING Siblings in Christ, receive this blessing: God, the creator, ☩ Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the comforter, bless you and keep you in eternal love. Amen. DISMISSAL Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
