12th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion August 23, 2020 Drive-In Worship at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church PRELUDE WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen. Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin. Reconciling God, We confess we do not trust your abundance, we deny your presence, we place our hope in ourselves. We abuse your creation for our benefit. We fear difference, and fail to welcome others as you welcome us. We sin in thought, word and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; in your Spirit lead us to live and serve in newness of life. Amen. Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray: Freeing God; Jesus spoke truth to an angry crowd and set the woman free. Create welcoming and loving hearts in us that we too may choose freedom for ourselves and others. In Jesus name. Amen SCRIPTURE Psalm 8:1-5 O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. Word of God, Word of Life. GOSPEL John 8:1-11 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, 'Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?' They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, 'Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.' And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' She said, 'No one, sir.' And Jesus said, 'Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.' MESSAGE MUSIC FOR MEDITATION PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Lord our rock, you are our foundation in Jesus Christ, your Son, whom we confess as the living God. You call forth praises from the far reaches of the universe to the smallest of creatures. Prepare your church for its mission in bearing witness to Christ, both here at home and throughout the world in a spirit of praise and thanksgiving. Help us to cherish this wonderful home you give us. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Direct the leaders of countries, legislators and magistrates, mayors and councils, to walk in your ways, to value the sanctity and well-being of all human life. Help leaders regard those in need with mercy and fulfill your loving purposes in the governance of peoples. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You call us into this commumity, in which, though many we are one in Christ. May we recognize in our selves and each other, the unique gifts you have given us to build up your church for the sake of the world. Though we walk in the midst of trouble, through this pandemic, you preserve us, deliver us, and fulfill your purpose for us. According to your steadfast love, grant healing and wholeness to those who are bereaved, in trouble or adversity, or sick and in need of care especially those we name before you now... Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You are the everlasting Rock from which we were hewn, and you restore your people to joy and gladness. In blessed memory and hope, we thank you for the lives of our beloved dead especially all who have died with COVID-19, and those who have died alone. Bring us with them to our heavenly home. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. In the certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love, we offer these prayers to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me. THE LORD'S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Friends of Jesus, come to the table. Receive nourishment for your journey. You are now invited to share the sacrament with one another, and with yourself using these or similar words: "The body of Christ, broken for you." "The blood of Christ, shed for you." BLESSING God, the creator, ☩ Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the comforter, bless you and keep you in eternal love. Amen. DISMISSAL Go forth into the world to serve God with gladness; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honor all people; love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
