HOW TO FAIL BETTER

Education

Tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Dame Stephanie Shirley speak to Rosie about a failure in her life.  Dame Stephanie arrived in the UK on the kindertransport in 1939 after fleeing nazi Germany as a child. In the male dominated business world of the 1960s, Dame Stephanie (or Steve, as she signed her business pitches - hoping to garner more respect)  launched a computer programming initiative - it was the first ever flexible working company.    When she floated the company in 1993 she became a multi-millionaire and made millionaires of 70 of her staff.   At one time, Dame Stephanie was 11th on the Sunday Times rich list, but she has chosen to give away almost all of her wealth.  Alongside building her business, Dame Stephanie was raising Giles,  her severely autistic and learning disabled son.  Giles died in 1998 and Dame Stephanie has dedicated much of the rest of her life to improving the lives of those suffering from autism and other learning disabilities.   Support the show (https://www.healthyselfish.co.uk/contact)
