Second Sunday after Pentecost June 14, 2020 PRELUDE WELCOME Prayer of the Day Let us pray: Loving God, you are the God of all love, and you love all of your children completely. Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we might truly love each other as Jesus loves us. In Jesus’ name. Amen SCRIPTURE READINGS 1 Thessalonians 1:1-6 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers, sisters, and siblings beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of people we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit. Word of God, Word of Life. Mark 12:30-31 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’ Word of God, Word of Life. MESSAGE SPECIAL MUSIC RECOGNITION AND INSTALLATION OF COUNCIL MEMBERS Mary Johnson, Melinda McNulty, Steve Smart – Completed Council Terms. Kristi Kaiser, Susan Kelly, Bob Grady – Newly Elected Council Members. Jim Dreger, Kris Bennett – Re-elected Council Members. Anne Felton, Don Kretlow, Jim Saladin, Larry Bornemeier, Jill Stamn – Continuing Elected Council Members Dear Church … Let us pray… beyond this congregation. In Jesus’ name. Amen Dear Church … confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we are baptized: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen St. Paul writes … to help maintain the life and harmony of this congregation. On behalf of your siblings in Christ, I ask: Are you ready to accept and faithfully carry out the duties of the offices to which you have been elected? If so please respond with “Yes, with the help of God.” All current council members: Yes, with the help of God. People of God, I ask you: Will you support your elected leaders, and will you share in the mutual ministry that Christ has given to all who are baptized? If so, please respond “Yes with the help of God” Everyone: Yes, with the help of God. I now declare you installed officers and council members of this congregation. God bless you with the Holy Spirit that you may continue as faithful servants of Christ. Amen PRAYERS Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world. Holy One, you bring us together and call us your own … help us respond to the needs of our neighbors. Hear us, O God. Amen Holy One, the whole earth is yours … inspire us to care for what you have provided. Hear us, O God. Amen Holy One, you provide congregational leaders … as they serve together to serve you and your world through CTS. Hear us, O God. Amen Holy One, you are the God of healing and peace … until the day you bear us up to join the saints in light. Hear us, O God. Amen Receive these prayers, O God, and those too deep for words; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, blessed it, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.” THE LORD’S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen You are now invited to share the sacrament with one another, and with yourself using these or similar words: The body of Christ, broken for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. BLESSING God, source of all life, God, the Word of love, God the Spirit of truth + bless you all, now and forever. Amen DISMISSAL Go forth into the world to serve God with gladness; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honor all people; love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God.
