In his recent dissertation, Dr. Isais Wellington Smith (pugilist and LA Native), explores and unveils the culture of Los Angeles boxing exploring cultural and racial tropes as well as the pedagogy of styles. Written from first hand experience as a fighter and cutman. While boxing doesn’t have transparent acts of racism nuance can be found within the language of gyms, ‘Black fighter’s cannot take a body shot’ or ‘Mexicans are different... you can hit them with everything and they keep coming.’ Additionally, we spoke about how American black fighters are pigeonholed into adopting a role as an antagonist as opposed to be other Nation’s fighters. Dr Isais Wellington Smith, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri- Columbia Teaching in the Areas of Sociology of Sport, Social Inequalities, Race and Ethnic Minorities, Intro to Sociology, Sports Protest Movements, and Social Deviance.
