This week we discuss the Georgia father and son who were finally charged two months after killing Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man who had been going for a run in their neighborhood. We also talk about the reopening of California, and what that looks like as a few stores reopen today (Friday, May 8). It's a long one, so here are the timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 6:15 - California is activating portions of 'phase 2' in what will be a very long process to reopen the state. Here in Sacramento County, this manifests in an increase of coronavirus testing, opening of certain stores (so long as they use drive-through pick-up), and public musings from the mayor over what a reopening of restaurants would look like. 47:50 - It is absolutely galling that it took two months for Georgia officials to charge Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, over their killing of Ahmaud Arbery, who had simply been out running in the neighborhood. Even more so since it took the public release of a video showing his tragic death. But it's also no surprise to us that the older McMichael has a background in law enforcement, and conveniently worked with the county district attorney. We discuss the prospect of any form of justice coming from this case, as well as what it means to be Black in 2020 America.
