5th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion July 5, 2020 Drive-In Worship at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen. Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin. Reconciling God, We confess we do not trust your abundance, we deny your presence, we place our hope in ourselves. We abuse your creation for our benefit. We fear difference, and fail to welcome others as you welcome us. We sin in thought, word and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; in your Spirit lead us to live and serve in newness of life. Amen. Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: Steadfast God, help us to hear your word at all times. You are the God of all salvation. Fill each of us with the Holy Spirit that we might endure the hard times and live for the gospel. In Jesus’ name. Amen SCRIPTURE 1 Thessalonians 2: 13-17 We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God’s word, which is also at work in you believers. For you, dear ones, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you suffered the same things from your own compatriots as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out; they displease God and oppose everyone by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. Thus they have constantly been filling up the measure of their sins; but God’s wrath has overtaken them at last. As for us, dear siblings, when, for a short time, we were made orphans by being separated from you—in person, not in heart—we longed with great eagerness to see you face to face. Word of God, Word of Life. Mark 8: 34-35 Jesus called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. Word of God, Word of Life. Message Special Music Prayers Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world. We pray for the whole Church. Sustain us with your word. Embrace us as we struggle to find our common ground. Lift up leaders with powerful and prophetic voices. Free us from stagnant faith. Energize this congregation to think and act creatively, to maintain connections, to forgive and to renew relationships. Shine in this community that we might notice the ways your love transforms our lives. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We pray for the well-being of creation and all you have made. Move us to protect the air, water, and land from abuse and pollution. Free us from apathy in our care of creation and direct us toward sustainable living. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We pray for all nations as we observe this Independence Day weekend. Guide our leaders in developing just policies and guide difficult conversations, especially in this time of global pandemic. May we use our freedoms to free others through real relationship-building, leading us to expansive love for our neighbors, protecting them from illness and expressing authentic care. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We pray for all in need. For all who are tired, feeling despair, sick, or oppressed, especially those we name now… Take their yoke upon you and ease their burdens. Give your consolation and free us from all that keeps us bound. We give you thanks for all who have gone before us in faith. Grant them eternal rest and comfort us in our grief until we are joined with them in new life. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Receive these prayers, O God, and those too deep for words; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen HOLY COMMUNION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me. Amen THE LORD’S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Friends, come to the table. Receive nourishment for your journey. You are now invited to share the sacrament with one another, and with yourself using these or similar words: The body of Christ, broken for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. BLESSING God, source of all life, God, the Word of love, God the Spirit of truth + bless you all, now and forever. Amen DISMISSAL Go forth into the world to serve God with gladness; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honor all people; love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God.
