After last week’s intense discussion of racism, the REAL DEBATE panel (Jeff, Jerad, Jim, and Greg) focuses on the practical questions of police reform. Greg describes a reform bill authored by Democrats in the House, and Jim gives an early handicap on its prospects. Jerad and Jeff contend we should take the slogan “defund the police” seriously, arguing for a complete reset in community police relations.  Greg suggests that replacing part of the police function with a social service function will *improve* police effectiveness by taking away duties that police are ill-equipped and unmotivated to perform.  The panel concludes that a sea change of public opinion is happening, and that big changes are afoot.
