The term alopecia means hair loss. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that often results in unpredictable hair loss. In the majority of cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. For most people, the hair loss is nothing more than a few patches, though in some cases it can be more extreme. Alopecia areata affects people of all ages, although it most commonly appears in adolescence or early adulthood. Hair loss occurs over a period of weeks. The hair usually grows back after several months, although it may fall out again. In some cases, unpredictable cycles of hair loss followed by regrowth can last for years. Due to the fact that much of the public is still not familiar with alopecia areata, it can have a profound impact on one’s life and functional status, both at work and at school. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), founded in 1981, provides support to patients afflicted with alopecia areata, builds public awareness regarding the disease and funds research to find its causes, treatment protocols and cure. The organisation has over 60,000 members. Its mission is to support research to find a cure or acceptable treatment for alopecia areata, to support those with the disease, and to educate the public about alopecia areata.
