Business

As a child, Debra Lee assumed she would spend the majority of her career practicing law to please her father. Many co-workers, friends and family thought Debra was crazy when she decided to leave her stable job at a law firm in D.C. to pursue a career in media, much less at a company many had never heard of. That company was BET. Debra went on to spend 32 years at the company, 13 of them as CEO. On this episode, Debra explains the reasons why she chose to pursue a career in media and how her path to the C-suite was formed day-by-day, facing several battles along the way. She reflects on the most difficult parts of being a CEO, and how learning to say no ultimately shaped her into a better leader. Plus her decision to leave the company.
