“My homeschooling and discipline had good intentions. I’m sorry if I’ve done anything to cause them harm. I love my children and believe my children love me. ...I hope the very best for my children in the future.” These are the words spoken by David Turpin’s lawyer at his sentencing hearing. A man who, along with his wife Louise, held their 13 children captive and tortured them for years on end. The couple’s emotional and physical abuse of their own family makes for one of the most shocking cases in recent history, alongside the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard. The Turpin children, at the time of discovery, ranged from 2 to 29 years old. Their living conditions were inhumane. The list of neglect and abuses, almost endless.
