A Conversation with Captain Sandy Yawn and Amanda Jane Clarkson - LeadHERship - How to Wake up. Show up. Kick Ass. Repeat On today’s super inspiring podcast, I share an incredible conversation with Captain Sandy Yawn, a Fort Lauderdale native with over three decades of yachting experience under her belt. Captain Sandy is one of the most respected captains in the industry and was destined for a life at sea. Growing up on Florida’s west coast, this Pisces water-lover started out washing boats. Later, becoming a certified scuba diver and then a boat crew member, her career on the sea had begun. Thirty years on, Captain Sandy is one of the most respected captains in the industry. She is a leader, a hero, an international speaker and businesswoman, whose exceptional leadership style has helped her to break through every obstacle in her path. As a renowned superyacht captain, Sandy’s integrity and courage has earned her an outstanding reputation as an elite class of captain. Tapping into her affinity for adventure, she charted a brand new course in 2015 when she became a series lead on Bravo’s hit series Below Deck Mediterranean. Now in her fifth season with the show, Sandy is renowned as a powerful female role model. We sat down with the no-nonsense captain with a heart of gold and chatted about her unique approach to superyacht command in an industry comprized mainly of men. “Still today, this role is predominantly male. But, honestly, it's not on them. It’s not the men’s fault that there aren't many women in this industry - it’s all on us women. We choose not to pursue these careers, to take the risks, accept the challenges and go for it,” says Sandy. “I pursued this career. I took that challenge on. There is opportunity there if you are willing to take the leap,” she says. It’s the women who go before us that give us the courage to step forward. Sandy kept a close eye on other women within her industry that were paving the way and giving 1000% to their jobs. She watched them lead and felt inspired to follow in their footsteps. “Women who accept the challenges and don’t give up, empowering women to say ‘yes’, no matter what it is, those women have been icons to me.” This conversation was one of my favourites so far!
