One of the most influential authors of the 20th century, James Joyce was an author of Irish descent who helped define the modernist avant-garde movement, and is most fondly remembered for his novel "Ulysses" which is an artfully crafted retelling of Homer's Odyssey. But this week we take a deep dive into his lesser know work... DUBLINERS is an anthology of 15 short stories Joyce published in 1914 at the peak of Irish Nationalism, which tell assorted middle-class stories that take place in and around Dublin. A PAINFUL CASE is a sad tale of loneliness and loss, seen through the eyes of a man who falls into an odd relationship with a married woman, before things suddenly go too far, too fast, and ending far too soon. It's a wonderfully descriptive tale and one that I really like, although Joyce does his best to give the reader a lot to chew on verbally...
